The NMHU Cowboys completed their first Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference sweep of the season on 3/4 with two wins over Regis University in Denver, Colo. The Pokes knocked off the Rangers 14-9 in game one of the day and 7-5 in game two. With their wins, the Cowboys improve to 10-1 on the season and a perfect 4-0 in RMAC play. The Cowboys will look to continue their winning ways as they travel to Kearney, Neb. to take on the Lopers of the University of Nebraska-Kearney on 3/9 for a four game series.
In game one of the day, the Cowboys and the Rangers traded blows back-and-forth throughout. The Cowboys struck first with a three run third innings. The Rangers answered right back with a seven run third inning of their own to lead 7-3. The Cowboys would string together six runs over the next five innings to take a 9-7 lead heading into the bottom of the eighth inning. The Rangers mounted a comeback in the bottom of the eighth inning, scoring two runs to knot the score up at 9-9. Neither team would score in the ninth inning to take the game into extra innings. In the tenth inning the Cowboys came out swinging as they scored five runs off of three hits to take the lead for good as the NMHU defense held the Rangers scoreless in the bottom of the tenth en route to their ninth win of the season.
Offensive leaders for the Cowboy include:
Matt Gualco,
AJ Alexander and
Erik Scott. Gualco led the way for the Pokes offensively finishing game one 4-5 with two runs scored and four RBI's. Alexander finished the day3-5 with two runs scored, two RBI's and two doubles. Scott rounds out the top three performers finishing the game 2-5 with two runs scored.
Jason Sirak got the start on the mound for the Pokes in game one. Sirak allowed five earned runs on six hits and struck out one batter in two and one third innings pitched.
David Saiz came in for Sirak and held the Rangers scoreless through three innings pitched while allowing two hits and striking out five RU batters.
Richard Sandoval would then come in for Saiz and continue to hold the Rangers scoreless and hitless through two thirds of an inning pitched while striking out one batters.
Eric Maupin came in for relief of Sandoval and allow two runs on four hits while striking out three Regis batters in one and two third innings pitched.
Oscar Almeida (1-0) got the win for the Pokes holding the Rangers scoreless through two and one third innings pitched while striking out one Regis batter.
In game two the Cowboys never trailed as they jumped out to an early 3-0 lead after the first three innings played. The Rangers scored one run in the fourth inning to make the score 3-1. The Pokes would score three runs in the fifth inning to increase their lead to 6-1 going into the sixth inning. The relentless Rangers would again try to mount a late comeback much like in the first game and score three runs in the sixth inning chipping away at the NMHU lead 6-4 going into the seventh and final inning. The Pokes increased their lead to 7-4 scoring one run in the seventh inning as
Jarod Jamerson crossed the plate off of a
Jordan Falcon single. Regis scored one run in the bottom of the seventh to make the score 7-5, but that would be as close as they would get as the Cowboys secured the series sweep over Regis and improved their record to 10-1 on the season and 4-0 in conference play.
Chris Prokupek (2-0) got the win on the mound for the Cowboys in game two. Prokupek allowed two earned runs on three hits and struck out two batters in five and two third innings pitched.
Richard Sandoval came in for relief of Prokupek for a brief appearance.
Gavin Hite then came in for Sandoval and allowed no runs and one hit in one third of an inning while striking out one batter. After getting the win in game one of the day,
Oscar Almeida would come in for Hite and allow on run on two hits and strike out one Regis batter in one inning pitched earning his second save of the season.
Offensive leaders for the Cowboys in game two include:
Eric Maupin and
Luis Saenz. Maupin finished the game going 3-4 with one run scored, one RBI and one double. Saenz ended game two of the day going 2-3 with two runs scored, one RBI, one double and one triple.
The Cowboys will look to continue their winning ways as they travel to Kearney, Neb. to take on the Lopers of the University of Nebraska-Kearney on 3/9 for a four game series with the Lopers.
