The NMHU Cowboys fell to the #23 Mavericks of Colorado Mesa University by a final score of 11-3 in the series finale between the two divisional leaders on 4/1 in Las Vegas, N.M. With the loss the Cowboys split the series with CMU at two games apiece. The Cowboys were held to just five hits on the day and finished with a team batting average of .161 in the series finale. The Cowboys struggled with CMU's pitching throughout most of the game, not getting their first hit until the fifth inning as
Kyle Davis singled through the left side. With the loss, the Cowboys drop to 20-9 on the season and 13-7 in RMAC play. Despite the loss, the Pokes sit atop the RMAC Plains Division and third overall in the latest RMAC standings.
Gavin Hite (1-1) got the start on the mound for the Cowboys. Hite finished the day allowing four runs on five hits and striking out two batters in two and one-third innings pitched.
Ray Torres came in for relief of Hite and finished his outing allowing three runs on two hits in two-thirds of an inning pitched.
Mike McDermott would then come in for Torres and allow just two runs on two hits in four innings pitched.
Nicasio Gonzalez closed out the game for the Pokes allowing two runs on four hits and striking out two CMU batters in two innings pitched.
Offensive leaders for the Cowboys include:
Erik Scott,
Thomas King and
Jarod Jamerson. Scott had only one at-bat for the day, but finished the game going 1-1 with one run scored, two RBI's and a homerun. King finished the game going 1-2 and Jamerson finished the game going 1-3 with one RBI.
The Cowboys will hit the road to take on their next opponent as they travel to Denver, Colo. to take on the Roadrunners of Metro State College for a four game series starting on 4/5. First pitch is scheduled for 3:00 p.m.
