The Diamond Cowboys (26-10, 19-8 RMAC) earned two wins on Saturday 4/14 against Colorado School of Mines (11-20, 10-17 RMAC). With the two wins, Highlands surges past Regis University in the Plains Division of the RMAC standings by five games with 13 games remaining in the season, including four against Regis.
Highlands won the first game by two, 11-9, which included 14 hits from the Cowboys and five pitchers.
Oscar Almeida earned his ninth save on the season, while Rich Sandoval notched his first win. Although the Cowboys did not score every inning, their offense was stronger than the visiting Orediggers who failed to capitalize on Highlands' mere three errors.
Leadoff batter
Josh McMahon doubled to right field and crossed the plate in the next at bat as
AJ Alexander squeaked a ball into right center.
Matt Gualco pushed Alexander into scoring position with a ground out to third base. Alexander then scored for the 'Pokes when
Kyle Davis singled and both Cowboys took advantage of a botched play.
The third inning was where the Cowboys scored their most runs and when Mines committed their only error of the game. Alexander and McMahon both scored on a right side single from
Luis Saenz.
Kyle Davis then brought in
Matt Gualco on a single up the middle. Davis crossed the plate on a sacrifice bunt from
Thomas King.
From the two scored in the first inning the Cowboys, the Orediggers notched their nine consecutively in the second through fifth innings. Highlands proved to be an RMAC powerhouse as they climbed out of their two run deficit scoring four in the sixth inning and capturing the win. Gualco and Saenz both went two-for-three and designated hitter
Kyle Davis hit two-for-three with two runs and three RBI's in the first game.
The second game was a heated battle the first three innings as Mines notched two in the first then another in the third. But, Highlands took the lead for good with a three run fourth inning and a 10 run fifth inning. Both King and
Erik Scott tripled in the 10 run, 10 hit fifth.
Head Coach
Steve Jones was extremely impressed with Gualco's pitching in the second game as he faced 30 batters and pitched 6.0 innings.
The Cowboys take on Colorado School of Mines on 4/15 at noon to finish the four-game series.
