The NMHU Cowboys secured the series sweep over the Orediggers of the Colorado School of Mines with a 6-3 win on 4/15 in Las Vegas, N.M. The Pokes struck first blood against the Orediggers scoring one run in the first inning as
Luis Saenz drove in
AJ Alexander with a single up the middle to put the Cowboys in the lead. The Cowboys would never trail as they added one more run in the third inning as
Josh McMahon crossed the plate off a
Luis Saenz sacrifice fly to put the Cowboys up 2-0. Both teams went scoreless through the fourth, fifth and sixth innings. The Cowboys broke the game wide open with a four run seventh inning to put them up 6-0. The Orediggers would mount a late surge to threaten the Pokes in the ninth inning scoring three runs, but 6-3 would be as close as the Orediggers would get as
Oscar Almeida struck out CMS's Charlie Basil for the final out of the game. With the win, the Cowboys improve to 27-10 on the season and 20-8 in RMAC play.
Chris Prokupek (4-4) got the start and the win on the mound for the Pokes against CSM. Prokupek held the Orediggers scoreless on four hits and struck out two batters in six innings pitched.
Oscar Almeida came in for relief of Prokupek and earned his tenth save of the season allowing three runs on three hits and struck out two batters in in three innings pitched.
Jordan Falcon,
Kyle Davis and
Luis Saenz led the Cowboys offensively for the day. Falcon finished the day 2-4 with one RBI. Davis finished going 1-4 with three RBI's and one double. Saenz rounds out the top three performers going 1-2 with one run scored and two RBI's.
The Cowboys will take the field again on 4/20 as they host RMAC opponent, the Rangers of Regis University for a four game series. First pitch is scheduled for 3:00 p.m. in Las Vegas, N.M.
