Highlands baseball (23-9, 16-7 RMAC) earned two more wins on 4/6 against Metro State (9-20, 6-17 RMAC) 9-6 and 11-2.
Oscar Almeida picked up his eighth saveof the season in the first game as he faced three batters, threw 13 pitches and struck out one.
Eric Maupin earned the win and improved to 2-1, throwing 106 pitches and striking out eight in the five innings he was on the hill.
The Cowboys scored in the first five of the seven innings of the first game, striking first from a double by
Luis Saenz who knocked in
Derek Ward. Highlands controlled the game both offensively and defensively. With Maupin on the bump, Metro state was held to four runs. Maupin only faced four batters his final inning and fanned one.
Offensively,
Josh McMahon hit four-for-four and crossed the plate three times.
Thomas Lyons also fared well at the plate for the 'Pokes hitting three-for-four, crossing the plate twice and knocking in two of his teammates.
The second game seemed like a cake walk as the Cowboys tacked on six runs within the first three innings. Metro earned their only two in the first inning from a base on balls followed by a single which resulted in extra bases. Metro's Schultheis single in right field scored the runners in scoring position.
Head Coach
Steve Jones' offense did not take too kindly to the first strike, as they answered right back with four runs on three hits. Highlands took advantage of Metro's two errors in the second inning with smart base running and flawless execution.
Matt Gualco (3-1) threw all seven innings and fanned eight of the 26 batters he faced. Out of Gualco's 94 pitches, only four of them produced a walk.
“I liked how well our offense executed and how great our defense was today,” said Head Coach
Steve Jones. “Tomorrow is a new game and we have to work just as hard as we did today to complete the series.”
