Highlands (23-10, 16-8 RMAC) dropped their final decision of the Denver road trip against Metro State (10-20, 7-17 RMAC) 10-4. Even with the loss, the Cowboys took the series 3-1. NMHU still sits atop the RMAC Plains Division and third overall.
The 'Pokes struck first in both the first and third innings only scoring one run in each outing, but the Roadrunners notched six in the bottom of third using Highland's faulty pitching to their advantage. Already faced with a six run deficit,
Luis Saenz tried starting the offense in the fifth inning with his second homerun of the season. Saenz knocked in three Cowboys in his two-for-three outing.
Chris Prokupek dropped to 3-4 on the season even though he fanned three of the 25 batters he faced. Both
Mike McDermott and
Ray Torres combined for three strikeouts against 14 batters.
“I'm quite happy that we won the series, but not too thrilled at how we played on the third day of a series,” commented Head Coach
Steve Jones. “There are 16 games left in the season, and we should be worrying about the post season one game at a time.”
