The NMHU Cowboys RMAC Tournament journey hit a stumbling block on 5/10 as they fell to the Rangers of Regis University 4-2 in the second round of the tournament. The Cowboys took an early lead against the Rangers scoring one run in the first inning to lead 1-0. The Pokes would hold the Rangers scoreless in the bottom of the first inning, but Regis would score in the bottom of the second inning to even the score at one apiece. Both teams would remain scoreless through the third inning. Regis would crack the scoring drought in the fourth inning scoring off an NMHU throwing error to take a 2-1 lead. Each team would go scoreless through the fifth and sixth innings. Regis would extend their lead to 3-1 in the seventh scoring off an RBI double. The Cowboys showed sign of life in the eighth inning scoring one run off a
Josh McMahon RBI single which pushed
Jordan Falcon across the plate to bring the Cowboys within one of Regis 3-2. That would be as close as the Pokes would get to Regis for the night as the Rangers scored once more in the bottom of the eighth inning to put them up 4-2. The Cowboys went scoreless in the top of the ninth inning to secure the Regis win by a final score of 4-2. With the loss, the Cowboys drop to 38-13 on the season. The Pokes will face the Mavericks of Colorado Mesa University in an elimination game on 5/11 at noon in Pueblo, Colo.
Matt Gualco (5-2) got the start on the mound for the Pokes. Gualco allowed three earned runs on seven hits while striking out seven Regis batters in eight innings pitched. Gualco pitched his third complete game for the Cowboys this season.
Jordan Falcon and
Josh McMahon led the way for the Cowboys offensively. Falcon finished the night 2-2 with one run scored. McMahon finished 2-4 with one RBI for the game.
The Cowboys will continue their hunt for the RMAC Tournament crown on 5/11 as they take on the Mavericks of Colorado Mesa University in an elimination game in Pueblo, Colo. First pitch is scheduled for 12:00 p.m.
