Jason Sirak sent the Mavericks of Colorado Mesa packing. The southpaw threw 8.1 innings in the elimination game and earned the 7-5 win which advanced the 'Pokes to play Regis at 7 p.m.
In the 35 batters Sirak faced, he gave up only two earned runs, walked two and fanned one. Offensively, the Cowboys spread out their seven hits between seven different batters. Both
Luis Saenz and
Jordan Falcon crossed the plate twice.
Oscar Almeida notched his 13th save of the season in 2/3 innings pitched.
Mesa struck early in the first inning on a fielders choice but the Cowboys matched the run a half inning later on a RBI from
Eric Maupin who scored
Luis Saenz from first.
The teams traded runs again in the fifth and sixth innings, but a five-run eighth from the visiting Cowboys gave them the lead for good.
After
Thomas King started the inning grounding out to first,
Jordan Falcon reached on a base on balls, but moved to third on a single from
Erik Scott.
AJ Alexander advanced the runners on a suicide squeeze that sparked the offensive momentum Highlands needed. The Cowboys' aggressive base running mixed with small ball was the combination that earned against the RMAC Mountain Division Champions.
“I thought our pitching was great today. Sirak threw a great game and he definitely earned the win,” noted Head Coach
Steve Jones. “We also hit well on a day that was difficult for batters. We just have to prepare for Regis this evening and keep focused on pushing deeper into the post season.”
