Cowgirls Rally Past the Skyhawks

Darian Mullen
Box Score The NMHU Cowgirls rallied in five sets to beat the Skyhawks of Fort Lewis College on Saturday, 9/15. Dominating the Skyhawks with another top notch performance was Darian Mullen with a stellar 26 kills, and a .352 hitting percentage.

Saturday night was living proof that sometimes all you need is one super star to make the difference between winning and losing. In Durango, Colo. New Mexico Highlands Cowgirl outside hitter Mullen proved that she is capable of carrying a lot on her shoulders.  Mustering out a impressive .352 hitting percentage and providing a top notch performance with 26 kills as the Cowgirls (4-6 overall, 1-1 in the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference) rallied back from a 2-1 deficit to tally a much needed victory over Fort Lewis (4-6, 1-1) in five sets (25-22, 18-25, 15-25, 25-12, 15-10).

The Cowgirls came into Whalen Gymnasium with something to prove coming off a bitter three-set sweep on Friday, 9/14, by the Colorado Mesa University Mavericks. Saturday was a different story, coming into the game stealing an early momentum shift and never looking back with helping hands from NMHU's middles, Sarah Dirmeyer and Mariah White who combined for nine kills in the first set.

The Skyhawks didn't go away without a fight, winning the next two sets with convincing victories (25-18, and 25-15 scores).

That was the only time the Skyhawks seemed to have a competitive chance, getting behind the Cowgirls in the fourth set by 14-1, and they were never able to recover, dropping that set (25-12).

The final set of the match was a back and forth contest but prevailing to victory were the Cowgirls (15-10).

The Cowgirls setter Rae Mulitalo notched 42 assists. Marina Samoa had 19 digs and four blocks, while Katie Saavedra had 17 digs silencing the crowd on some incredible hard-hit balls.

First year Head Coach Brian Crawford was extremely proud and impressed with the Cowgirls ability to handle adversity. “Tonight was a much needed victory to keep us on track for our ultimate goal.”

The NMHU Cowgirls will be in action again with their first home matches of the season with one against in-state rival Eastern New Mexico University, on 9/18. Then following up with Western State Colorado University, on 9/21, and Adams State, on 9/22, both RMAC conference match-ups the Cowgirls hope to continue to stay on the winning end of things.
