The Cowgirls improved to 2-1 in the RMAC and 6-6 overall with a four set ( 25-19, 25-22, 25-20, 25-18) win over Western State Colorado University, on 9/21, at John A. Wilson Complex in Las Vegas, N.M.
With a surge in the first set, Highlands established a tone for the game with 12 kills and game high .364 hitting percentage. Both teams were battling to establish a lead thru the first nine points but once NMHU sustained a lead to go up 11-9 the Cowgirls never looked back winning the set 25-19.
The Mountaineers picked up the momentum in the second set winning their only set of the match 25-22. NMHU was plagued by errors that were timely and costly. 13 of the Mountaineers points were off of Highlands' mistakes, which could have been easily prevented. Splitting the first two sets, the Cowgirls came back to finish off WSCU.
The Cowgirls showed a completely different mentality in the third set. Highlands came out looking to continue their roll to victory, with a 16-11 lead they jumped out to an early five point run on a blend of WSCU errors and with help from NMHU's
Stephanie Wilson, who had four kills and three digs.
Highlands dominated the fourth set as they jumped out to a 6-2 lead after a yellow card was given to WSCU Head Coach Katie Moskowitz. The Mountaineers only had a .148 hitting percentage compared to the Cowgirls' .233. The Cowgirls never took their foot off the gas pedal winning 25-18. Western State falls to 0-3 in the RMAC and 1-10 overall.
The Cowgirls were led by Senior middle blocker
Sarah Dirmeyer who had an impressive .429 attack percentage, to go along with eight kills and two digs. Junior outside hitter
Marina Samoa pushed the Cowgirls with 11 kills and 13 digs. Junior setter Rae Mulitalo contributed with 35 assists, two aces, and five digs.
Defensively, Junior libero Katie Saveedra notched 12 digs, four aces, and two assists.
“We played smart and composed tonight.” said Head Coach
Bryan Crawford. Looking to keep this momentum going against NCAA DII 25th ranked Adams State Grizzlies, Crawford said “Our girls will need to come ready to play against top-notch competition”.
The Cowgirls host Adams State, on 9/22, at 7p.m. The Grizzles are currently ranked first in the RMAC West Division with a 3-0 confrence record and 9-1 overall.
