Box Score Las Vegas, N.M. – The NMHU Cowboy Baseball team hosted the Eastern New Mexico University Greyhounds for their first game of the 2013 season. The Cowboys were looking to start out the game with a win. ENMU came out strong, scoring 15 runs in the first 4 innings. But the Cowboys did not fold. In the following innings the Cowboys would regain the lead and beat the Greyhounds 22-16. With the win the Cowboys, led by Head Coach
Steve Jones, start their season 1-0.
The two teams went scoreless through the first inning with a series of defensive plays. ENMU was the first to score. In the top of the second inning, the Greyhounds scored three runs.
ENMU continued the offense by scoring nine runs in the top of the third inning. The Cowboys attempted to score with three runners on base in the bottom of the third inning, but the Greyhounds ended the third inning with an unassisted triple play. The score after three innings was 12-0 in favor of the Greyhounds.
ENMU scored three runs in the bottom of the fourth inning, making the score 15-0 going into the bottom of the fourth inning.
Holding their ground, the Cowboys fought back. In the bottom of the fourth inning the Cowboys exploded offensively, scoring 14 runs. The Cowboys capitalized on two Greyhound errors to score four runs. With the bases loaded, the Cowboys'
Josh McMahon stepped up to the plate and to hit a grand-slam home run. The Cowboys officially climbed back into the game with a 14 run fourth inning, trailing by only one run (15-14).
In the fifth inning,
Michael Garcia took the mound. Garcia was able to contain the ENMU offense to just one hit, retiring nine batters in his first win of the season (1-0).
The sixth inning was scoreless for the Greyhounds. Then in the bottom of the sixth the Cowboys took the lead, bringing three runs across home plate.
Jordan Goliat tied the game up for the Cowboys with an RBI triple and
Kyle Davis followed that up with a two-run homerun, giving the Cowboys a 17-15 lead.
The Cowboys were able to score another five runs in the bottom of the seventh inning, increasing their lead to 22-15. ENMU was able to pick up one more run in the top of the eighth inning, but the Cowboys defense stepped up and would not allow the Greyhounds to score again. NMHU closed out the top of the ninth inning and took their first victory of the year, by the final score of 22-16.
The Cowboys were led offensively by
Josh McMahon,
Kyle Davis, and
Jordan Goliat. McMahon was 4-4 at the plate with a grand-slam homerun. Davis went 3-4 in the batter's box with a two-run homerun. Goliat was also 4-4 at the plate, with an RBI triple.
Michael Garcia got the win for the Cowboys, in his three innings of relief. Garcia allowed no runs on one hit and struck out one.
The Cowboys will continue their non-conference home matchup with in-state rival Eastern New Mexico University, on Feb. 16, in a double header at Brandt Field. Come on out to the ballpark and enjoy the beginning of the 2013 Baseball season.
