Box Score Las Vegas, N.M. – The NMHU Cowboy Baseball team continued their non-conference series against Eastern New Mexico University, on Feb. 16, in a double-header matchup. The Cowboys lost both games to ENMU, the first game was 5-2 and the second game was 6-5. The Cowboys are currently 1-2 under Head Coach
Steve Jones.
ENMU 5 – NMHU 2
At the beginning of the game, the Cowboys' fell behind. With two runners on base, ENMU hit a home run in the top of the first inning, creating a 3-0 lead. Entering the bottom of the first inning, the Cowboys wanted to answer quickly. After getting the Cowboys' first hit of the game,
Jordan Goliat attempted to steal second but was caught for an out.
The second inning went quickly with no runs batted in by either team. ENMU scored two more runs in the third inning, making the score 5-0.
The Greyhounds' defense continued to hold the Cowboys back from scoring until the fifth inning when
Cole Davis found his way to home plate off a
Jordan Chavez sacrifice fly, making the score 5-1.
In the end ENMU's defense proved to be the deciding factor of this game, as NMHU takes their first loss of the season 5-2.
Cole Davis went 1-3 with one run scored. Corey Falvey scored the second Cowboy run and went 1-2 on the day.
ENMU 6 – NMHU 5
Part two of the doubleheader started at 2:00 p.m. ENMU started the game by scoring two runs in the top of the first inning and took an early 2-0 lead.
The Cowboys responded by scoring three runs of their own in the bottom of the first inning, making the score 3-2 in favor of NMHU.
Chris Pile brought in two runs with a double to center field and later capitalized on a Greyhound error by advancing to home plate.
In the third inning the Cowboys struck again, scoring a run because of a Greyhound error.
At the start of the fourth inning the Cowboys were up 4-2. ENMU responded immediately in the top of the fourth inning, scoring two runs and tying the game up 4-4.
NMHU regained the lead (5-4), scoring one run in the bottom of the fifth inning. The Cowboys would try to retain the lead but, the Greyhounds would get the lead in the sixth inning through a Cowboy error.
The final score was 6-5 in favor of ENMU.
Chris Pile went 2-3 at the plate, with one run and two RBIs. The Cowboy senior played a big role in the beginning of the game, helping the Cowboys gain a 3-2 lead in the first inning.
The Cowboys will continue their non-conference home matchup with in-state rival Eastern New Mexico University, on Feb. 17, at Brandt Field in Las Vegas, N.M. Come on out to the ballpark and enjoy the beginning of the 2013 Baseball season.
