Box Score Abilene, Texas – The NMHU Cowboy Baseball team won their final game of their road series against Abilene Christian University, by the final score of 5-4. The Cowboys came from behind in the eighth inning, to score three runs and grab the victory. The win gives the Cowboys a split in the four-game series against the Wildcats. The Cowboys, led by Head Coach
Steve Jones, are now 3-5 in the 2013 season.
NMHU 5 – ACU 4
The first two innings of the game was a pitchers' duel between NMHU and ACU. Neither team was able to record a hit.
The Cowboys struck first in the top of the third inning, when
Jarred Middleton crossed home plate on a wild pitch, giving the Cowboys a 1-0 lead.
The Wildcats tied the game up in the bottom of the fourth inning. They scored the run from third base off an RBI single to left-center field.
ACU took the lead (2-1) in the bottom of the fifth inning with another RBI single to left field.
In the top of the sixth inning,
Chris Pile scored from third base when
Cory Falvey hit a single to left field, evening the score up at two runs apiece.
The Wildcats took the lead back (4-2) in the bottom of the sixth inning. They scored two runs on another single to left field.
The Pokes struck again in the top of the eighth inning.
Chris Pile got things started with a home run over the wall in left field, cutting the Wildcats' lead down to just one run (4-3).
Derek Ward drew a walk in the next at-bat. Then
Cory Falvey drove the run in with an RBI triple to right-center field, tying the game up 4-4. The Cowboys drew another walk and then
Cole Davis stepped up and drove an RBI single to left field, scoring Falvey from third base. At the end of the top of the eighth inning the Cowboys were up 5-4.
Cowboy reliever
Oscar Almeida closed things down in the remainder of the game. He kept the Wildcats without a hit or a base runner in the final two innings and earned the win.
Cory Falvey and
Chris Pile led the Pokes on offense in the final game against ACU. Falvey was 2-4 at the plate, with two RBIs, one run scored and a triple. Pile went 1-4 from the batter's box, with two runs scored, one RBI, and his rally starting solo home run in the eighth inning.
Braulio Hernandez started the game for the Cowboys. He completed five innings from the mound, allowing two runs on five hits and striking out three batters.
Oscar Almeida (1-0) got the victory in his four innings of relief work from the pitcher's mound. Almeida allowed two runs on three hits and struck out three batters. Almeida shut down the Wildcats' offense in the final two innings to secure the win for the Cowboys.
The Cowboys will start Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference action next weekend, Mar. 1-3, in a four-game home stand against the rival Grizzlies of Adams State University, in Las Vegas, N.M. The first game on Friday, Mar. 1, is set to begin at 2:00 p.m. The Pokes will then host the Grizzlies in a double-header on Saturday, Mar. 2, and finish up with another nine inning game on Sunday, Mar. 3.
