Box Score 2 Pueblo, Colo. – The NMHU Cowboy Baseball team won both games of their second double header against the Thunderwolves of Colorado State University – Pueblo, on Mar. 10. The Pokes successfully completed the weekend sweep of the Thunderwolves, moving themselves on top of the RMAC Plains Division standings with a perfect 8-0 conference record and 11-5 in overall play. NMHU 15 – CSUP 9 (10 innings)
The Cowboys jumped out to an early lead in the first game on Sunday, Mar. 10. They picked up seven runs in the top of the first inning.
Derek Ward started the scoring with a base-clearing three-RBI double to right-center field.
Cole Davis and
Josh McMahon both brought in two-runs, giving the Cowboys an early 7-0 lead.
Jarred Middleton hit a solo home run in the top of the second inning, giving the Pokes an 8-0 lead. The Cowboy lead would go to 9-0, after
Jordan Goliat hit an RBI single in the top of the third inning.
The Thunderwolves shut down the Cowboys' offense for the remainder of regulation and CSU-Pueblo began to close the distance a little bit at a time. They picked up one run in the bottom of the third inning, three runs in the bottom of the fifth, and two more runs in the bottom of the eighth.
CSU-Pueblo sent the game into extra innings in the bottom of the ninth inning. They got two runs on four hits, to tie the game up 9-9.
In the top of the tenth, the Cowboys' bats came to life. They took advantage of some mistakes by the Thunderwolves' defense and scored six runs on three hits, to take the lead back 15-9.
Cowboys' closer
Oscar Almeida made his third appearance in the series in the bottom of the tenth inning. Almeida ensured the Cowboy victory by striking out the side.
Ray Torres earned the start for the Cowboys. He threw four and a third innings from the pitcher's mound, striking out an impressive 12 batters. Torres allowed four runs on 10 hits.
Oscar Almeida (3-0) earned his third win of the season in his one inning of relief. Almeida entered the game in the bottom of the tenth and struck out all three Thunderwolves he faced.
Matt Gualco and
Jarod Jamerson were the Cowboys' offensive leaders in game one. Gualco was 2-5 at the plate, with two runs scored, two RBIs, and a double. Jamerson finished the game 2-4 from the batter's box, with two runs scored and a double.
NMHU 14 – CSUP 3
The Pokes scored in the first inning, but the Thunderwolves matched them with a run of their own in the bottom of the inning.
Jordan Goliat would put the Cowboys in the lead (3-1) in the top of the second inning, with a two-RBI single.
The Cowboys' offense exploded in the top of the third inning. They picked up nine runs on six hits and took advantage of one CSU-Pueblo error. The inning was capped off with a three-run home run by
Kyle Davis.
CSU-Pueblo picked up another two runs in the bottom of the third, but the Cowboys had a comfortable 12-3 lead after three innings played.
The Pokes picked up two more runs in the top of the fifth, with RBIs by
Jordan Goliat and
Mike Bazuin. After holding the Thunderwolves scoreless in the bottom of the fifth, the Cowboys were on top 14-3.
Michael Garcia closed things out for the Cowboys in the bottom of the seventh and the Pokes finished with a 14-3 victory, completing the series sweep in Pueblo, Colo.
Chris Prokupek (2-1) earned his second win of the season in the start for the Cowboys. Prokupek threw six innings from the mound, allowing three runs on eight hits and striking out four.
Jordan Goliat and
Kyle Davis were the offensive leaders for the Cowboys in the second game against CSU-Pueblo. Goliat went 2-3 at the plate, with three RBIs, three runs scored, and a double.
Kyle Davis was 1-3 from the batter's box, with a three-run home run.
The Cowboys' Head Coach
Steve Jones picked up his 500th win in the last game versus the Thunderwolves. Coach Jones is currently in his 16th season at the helm of Cowboy Baseball. After a slow start, Coach Jones has the Cowboys on a nine-game winning streak.
The Cowboys will be in midweek non-conference action on Tuesday, Mar. 11, when they host in-state rival Eastern New Mexico University at Brandt Field in Las Vegas, N.M. The Cowboys faced off against the Greyhounds in their season opening series and finished the four-game home series 1-3 against ENMU. The game is set for a 2:00 p.m. start time.
