Cowboys Finish Series Against Metro State with a 7-2 Win

Box Score Las Vegas, N.M. – The NMHU Cowboy Baseball team earned a split in their four-game home series against Metropolitan State University of Denver with a 7-2 win in the final game of the series, on Mar. 17.  The Cowboys came back from an early 2-0 deficit and starter Chris Prokupek threw a complete game in the victory.  The Cowboys, led by Head Coach Steve Jones, are now 10-2 in the RMAC and 14-7 in overall play.

The Cowboys' defense struggled in the top of the first inning, making mistakes that led to two runs for the Roadrunners.

The Pokes were able to tie the game up (2-2) in the bottom of the third inning with RBIs from Jordan Goliat and Josh McMahon.

In the bottom of the fifth inning, the Cowboys took a one-run lead (3-2) when Josh McMahon had yet another RBI single, bringing Thomas Lyons home.

The game was scoreless for the next few innings until the Pokes' offense went back to work in the bottom of the eighth inning.  The Roadrunners made a pitching change with the bases loaded and Cole Davis was hit by the first pitch thrown, scoring Jonathon Stavinoha from third base. 

Jordan Falcon added another run to the scoreboard with a sacrifice fly to right field, allowing Matt Gualco to cross home plate.  Josh McMahon put two more runs on the scoreboard for the Cowboys with a two-RBI single that rolled to the left-field wall.  The Cowboys' offense added four more runs to their lead in the bottom of the eighth inning, taking a 7-2 lead.

With a five-run cushion, Chris Prokupek remained in the game for the top of the ninth inning and shut down the Roadrunners offense to secure his complete game victory by the final score of 7-2.

Chris Prokupek (3-1) earned the victory in a complete nine innings on the mound for the Cowboys.  Prokupek allowed two runs (one earned run) on five hits and struck out two batters.

Josh McMahon was the Pokes' offensive leader against the Roadrunners.  McMahon was an impressive 4-5 at the plate with four RBIs.

The Cowboys will be in action again on Mar. 19 when they travel down to Portales, N.M. to take on the Greyhounds of Eastern New Mexico University in the final showdown of their six-game series.  The Greyhounds have a slight advantage on the Cowboys in the series, having won three out of the five games the teams have played thus far.  If you can't make it down to Portales to watch your Cowboys in action, you can click HERE to follow the game on Live Stats.
