Box Score 2 Las Vegas, N.M. – The NMHU Cowboy Baseball team won both games of their double-header against the rival Grizzlies of Adams State University, on Mar. 2. The Cowboys led in game one and took advantage of a total of 11 runs scored in the fifth and sixth innings to win 14-3. In game two, the Cowboys had to come from behind twice, winning the game in extra innings 6-5. With the two victories the Cowboys, led by Head Coach
Steve Jones, improve their record in the RMAC to a perfect 3-0 and 6-5 in overall play.
NMHU 14 – ASU 3
Adams State started the scoring in the first two innings. They scored a run in the top of the first and then scored again in the top of the second inning to take an early 2-0 lead.
The Cowboys picked up a run in the bottom of the second inning.
Javier Ledford hit an RBI single to the short stop, scoring
Kyle Herrington from third base. After two played the score was 2-1, with ASU still leading.
The Cowboys took the lead (3-2) in the bottom of the third inning.
Kyle Herrington hit an RBI single to left-center field, scoring
Cory Falvey. Then
Jarred Middleton hit an RBI double to the right field fence, allowing Herrington to score.
Neither team scored in the fourth inning, but the Cowboys' bats caught fire in the bottom of the fifth inning.
Falvey and
Josh McMahon scored when
Kyle Herrington hit a two-RBI double through the left side of the infield. Herrington scored off of
Javier Ledford RBI double to right field. Then Ledford crossed home plate when
Jordan Falcon hit a sacrifice fly to center field. The Cowboys picked up their fifth run of the inning with the bases loaded when ASU's pitcher was credited with a balk, allowing
Tyler Hayes to score.
After five innings of play, the Cowboys held a comfortable 8-2 lead.
Javier Ledford struck again in the bottom of the sixth inning. With runners on second and third, Ledford stepped to the plate and hit a three-run homerun over the right-field fence.
Matt Gualco added another run to the scoreboard with his RBI single to left field.
Justin Rodriguez finished the Pokes' scoring in the sixth with a two-RBI double to right-center field, scoring
Jordan Chavez and Gualco.
The Grizzlies were able to pick up another run in the top of the seventh inning, but it wouldn't be enough and the Cowboys ended game one of the double header with a 14-3 victory.
Braulio Hernandez (1-1) earned his first victory of the season, throwing six innings from the mound. He struck out 10 Grizzlies, allowing two runs on eight hits.
Javier Ledford and
Kyle Herrington were the Cowboys' offensive leaders in game one. Herrinton was a perfect 3-3 at the plate, with four runs scored and three RBIs. Ledford went 3-4 from the batter's box, with five RBIs, two runs scored, and a three-run homerun.
NMHU 6 – ASU 5
Game two looked to be a pitcher's duel, as neither team was able to get a hit in the first inning.
The Grizzlies opened things up in the top of the second inning. Chris Morley put ASU on the scoreboard with his two-run home run to deep right field, giving the Grizzlies a 2-0 lead.
Both teams' offensives were shut down for the next few innings, until the Grizzlies struck again in the top of the sixth. They picked up a run on a sacrifice bunt and extended their lead 3-0.
The Pokes finally were able to pick up two runs in the bottom of the sixth inning.
Jordan Goliat was first to cross home plate when ASU's short stop committed a throwing error on
Kyle Davis' at bat. Davis was able to score the Cowboys' second run from third base, when
Jarred Middleton grounded out to second base. The Pokes had cut into the ASU lead 3-2.
The Cowboys were still down 3-2 going into the bottom of the seventh inning and they needed to score some runs to get the victory in game two.
Jordan Falcon gave NMHU hope when he led off with a double to right-center field. Falcon was able to advance to third on a passed ball. Then
Chris Pile brought Falcon home with a sacrifice fly to deep center field. NMHU was only able to get the one run, but that was enough to send the game into extra innings.
ASU was determined to find a win in their series against the Cowboys and their offense showed up again in the top of the eighth inning. They generated two runs in the inning to give themselves a 5-3 advantage and put the Cowboys on the ropes.
The Cowboys were up to the challenge in the bottom of the eighth inning. With one out and runners on first and second,
Justin Rodriguez came in as a pinch hitter. Rodriguez ripped a ball to the wall in right-center field, scoring Middleton and Davis. The Cowboys had a chance to end the game in the eighth inning, but a key mistake on the base path left the game tied up 5-5.
The game went into another extra inning and Cowboy fans were excited when the Pokes held the Grizzlies scoreless in the top of the ninth inning.
With the game still tied up 5-5, the Cowboys were looking for some offense to grab a victory in game two.
Cole Davis got the Pokes started with a single up the middle.
Jordan Goliat followed that up with a double down the right-field line, moving Davis over to third. ASU choose to put
Kyle Davis on first base with an intentional walk, loading the bases but keeping their double-play hopes alive.
Jarred Middleton stepped to the plate with the bases loaded and one out. Middleton fouled off the first pitch he saw. Then he became the hero of game two with his walk-off RBI single to left field, scoring
Cole Davis. The Cowboys won the game 6-5 in nine innings.
Oscar Almeida (2-0) earned the victory in his one and a third innings from the mound. Almeida entered the game in the eighth inning and struck out three of the seven batters he faced. He allowed two hits but shut down the Grizzlies offense, holding them scoreless at the end of the game.
Jarred Middleton and
Jordan Falcon were the offensive leaders for the Cowboys in game two. Middleton was 3-5 at the plate, with two RBIs and a run scored. Falcon finished the game 2-5 from the batter's box with one run scored.
The Cowboys will finish off their four-game conference home series against the rival Grizzlies of Adams State University, on Mar. 3. Game four of the series will be a full nine innings and the first pitch is scheduled for 12:00 p.m. Come on out to Brandt Field and watch your Cowboys in action.
