Box Score Grand Junction, Colo. – No. 17 Colorado Mesa University handed the Cowboy Baseball team an 11-6 conference loss, on Mar. 22, in the first game of the four-game series between the RMAC division leaders. The Cowboys, led by Head Coach
Steve Jones, are now 10-3 in the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference and 14-9 in overall play.

The Cowboys started the scoring in the top of the first inning. They picked up three runs in the inning, taking advantage of a shaky defensive start for the Mavericks and
Matt Gualco's two-RBI single.
The Mavericks' offense picked up the slack in the bottom of the first inning, putting up two runs on five hits. After one inning of the play the Cowboys had a 3-2 lead.
After an inning and a half of scoreless play, the Mavericks struck again in the bottom of the third. A two-run and a solo home run gave CMU a 5-3 lead after three innings played.
CMU picked up another run in the bottom of the fourth inning. Then a three-run home run in the bottom of the fifth extended the Maverick lead, 9-3.
The Cowboy offense was stopped by Maverick starter Nolan Snell (4-1), who struck out 10 and only gave up one hit in his seven innings from the pitcher's mound.
Two more runs crossed the plate for the Mavericks in the bottom of the seventh, giving them an 11-3 lead after seven innings played.
The Cowboys got some relief when CMU turned to their bullpen in the eighth inning. They scored three runs on RBIs from
Scott Frazier,
Tyler Hayes, and
Jordan Goliat. But it wouldn't be enough and when the final out was recorded, the Mavericks had taken the first game of the series 11-6.
Greg Hansen (3-3) was credited with the loss for the Cowboys. He threw five innings from the mound for the Pokes, giving up nine runs (eight earned) on 10 hits and striking out one.
Edgar Vela threw three innings of relief for the Cowboys, giving up two runs on two hits and striking out two batters.
Matt Gualco led the Cowboy offense with two RBIs, while going 1-2 at the plate.
The Cowboys will continue the four-game road series against the no. 17 Mavericks of Colorado Mesa University, on Mar. 23, in Grand Junction, Colo.
