Orediggers Take Game 1 from Cowboys, 2-1

#32 Josh McMahon
Box Score Las Vegas, N.M. – The NMHU Cowboy Baseball team lost the first game of their four-game home series against the Colorado School of Mines Orediggers, on Mar. 28, by the final score of 2-1.  The game had very little in the way of offense but the Orediggers were able to pick up the winning run in the fifth inning.  The Cowboys are now on a six-game losing streak, giving them a 10-7 record in the RMAC and 14-13 in overall play.

CSM 2 – NMHU 1
An error by the Cowboys and a couple of hits was all that the Orediggers needed to score the first run of the game in the top of the first inning.

The Cowboys picked up their only run of the game in the bottom of the fourth inning.  Derek Ward was able to score from third base when Kyle Davis was caught stealing second base.  Ward waited for the throw to second base and took advantage of the CSM defensive hesitation to cross home plate.  The run tied the game up, 1-1.

The game was not tied for long as the Orediggers were able to bring in another run in the top of the fifth inning.  CSM's Kyle Wallace hit an RBI double that rolled to the wall in right-center field, allowing Zach Bothwell to score from second base.  Another CSM base-runner tried to score on the play but the Cowboys were able to throw him out at the plate.

Neither team was able to score another run and the game ended with the Orediggers capturing the 2-1 victory over the Cowboys.

Oscar Almeida (3-1) picked up his first loss of the 2013 season against CSM.  Although Almeida is usually the Cowboys' closer, he drew the start in today's game and threw a complete nine innings.  Almeida allowed two runs on seven hits and struck out five.

Jarred Middleton and Kyle Davis were the Cowboys' offensive leaders against CSM today.  Middleton was 2-3 at the plate while Davis went 2-4 from the batter's box.

The Cowboys will continue their four-game conference home series against the Colorado School of Mines Orediggers on Friday, Mar. 29.  The Cowboys will host the Orediggers in a double-header at Brandt Field, in Las Vegas, N.M.  Game one of the double-header is set to begin at 12:00 p.m., with game two starting approximately 30 minutes after the completion of game one.  If you can't make it out to the ball park to catch your Cowboys in action, you can click HERE to follow the game on Live Stats.
