NMHU 11 – CSM 2
The excitement in game one started in the bottom of the second inning.
Mike Bazuin hit a bomb to left-center field. The ball looked like it was going to clear the fence, until it hit a suspension wire in-play and dropped at the base of the fence. Bazuin still managed a double on the play and
Josh McMahon crossed the plate, giving the Cowboys the initial 1-0 lead.
The Cowboys added another two runs to the scoreboard (3-0) in the third inning, when
Kyle Davis hit a two-RBI double through the left-side of the infield.
The Orediggers managed to score one run (3-1) in the top of the fourth inning, but
Mike Bazuin answered that in the bottom of the fourth. Bazuin didn't allow a wire to stop him this time and he crushed a pitch over the left field wall for a solo home run.
Jordan Falcon also scored in the inning when CSM tried to catch
Jordan Goliat stealing second base. Goliat successfully stole second base and Falcon took advantage of the mistake to score from third base, giving the Cowboys a 5-1 lead.
The Cowboys exploded for five runs in the bottom of the fifth inning.
Tyler Hayes was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded and
Josh McMahon crossed the plate for the first run.
Jordan Goliat added another two runs for the Cowboys with his two-RBI single that was too hot for the CSM third baseman to handle.
Matt Gualco followed that up with a two-RBI double to left-center field, giving the Cowboys a 10-1 lead after five innings.
Josh McMahon added yet another run for the Cowboys in the bottom of the sixth inning with his solo home run over the fence in left field. The Cowboys were in front 11-1 after six innings.
The Orediggers managed to pick up one more run in the top of the seventh inning, but it would not be enough and the Cowboys were victorious in game one by the final score of 11-2.
Ray Torres (2-2) was the winning pitcher for the Cowboys in game one. Torres threw a complete seven innings from the pitcher's mound, allowing two runs (one earned run) on seven hits. He struck out two of the Orediggers and did a great job of shutting down their offense.
Mike Bazuin and
Josh McMahon were the offensive leaders for the Cowboys in game one.
Bazuin was 2-3 at the plate with two RBIs, one run scored, and a solo home run.
McMahon went 1-2 from the batter's box, with three runs scored, one RBI, and a solo home run.
CSM 3 – NMHU 0
The Orediggers turned the tables on the Cowboys in the second game of today's (Mar. 29) double-header.
The story of game two was the Orediggers' starting pitcher Ben Gilman (4-2). He only allowed the Cowboys four hits in his complete seven innings from the mound, while notching six strikeouts.
The Orediggers were able to pick up a run in top of the fourth inning (1-0) and that was all Gilman needed in game two. CSM would add another two runs (3-0) in the top of the seventh for insurance.
When the final out was recorded in the bottom of the seventh inning, the Orediggers had taken game two by the final score of 3-0.
Michael Garcia (2-2) was credited with the loss in game two for the Cowboys. Garcia threw four innings from the pitcher's mound, only allowing one run on three hits and striking out two.
The Cowboys will host the Colorado School of Mines Orediggers in the final game of their four-game conference series on Saturday, Mar. 30, at Brandt Field. If you can't make it out to the ball park to catch your Cowboys in action, you can click
