Box Score Las Vegas, N.M. – The NMHU Cowboy Baseball team won the final game of their four-game conference home series against the Orediggers of the Colorado School of Mines, on Mar. 30, by the final score of 8-4. The victory gives the Cowboys a split (2-2) in the weekend series versus the Orediggers. The Cowboys' offense started out strong and worked to an 8-0 lead. Starter
Chris Prokupek held the CSM offense in check for eight complete innings and the NMHU bullpen was able to finish the game off for the 8-4 victory. The Cowboys, led by Head Coach
Steve Jones, improve to 12-8 in the RMAC and 16-14 in overall play.
NMHU 8 – CSM 4
The Cowboys offense went on the attack in the bottom of the first inning. With runners on first and second base and two outs,
Josh McMahon stepped up to the plate and hit a three-run home run over the fence in left field. The Cowboys held an early 3-0 lead after one inning of play.
The Pokes would add another run in the bottom of the second inning (4-0). Then in the bottom of the fifth inning,
Jarred Middleton hit a two-run bomb over the left-field fence, giving the Cowboys a 6-0 lead.
Tyler Hayes hit a two-RBI double to the corner of the fence in left field, scoring
Derek Ward and
Jordan Falcon. After six innings of play the Cowboys were comfortably in the lead 8-0.
The Orediggers started a rally in the top of the ninth inning, scoring four runs off the Cowboys' bullpen. Despite the comeback attempt by CSM, the Cowboys were able to hold off the Orediggers for the 8-4 victory.
Chris Prokupek (4-2) started the game and earned the win for the Cowboys. He threw eight innings from the mound for the Cowboys, giving up no runs on six hits and striking out three.
Josh McMahon and
Jarred Middleton were the offensive leaders in the game for the Cowboys.
McMahon was a perfect 3-3 at the plate with three RBIs, one run scored, and a three-run home run.
Middleton went 1-4 at the plate with two RBIs, two runs scored, and a two-run home run.
The Cowboys are currently in second place in the RMAC Plains Division, behind Colorado State University – Pueblo. NMHU Baseball has 20 games left in the 2013 season and they remain in contention for the RMAC postseason tournament.
The Cowboys will continue conference action next weekend (Apr. 5-7) when they travel to Denver, Colo. to take on the Rangers of Regis University in another four-game conference series. The Rangers are the second place team in the RMAC Mountain Division with an 11-5 conference record and 16-6 in overall play.
