Box Score 2 Pueblo, Colo. – The NMHU Cowboy Baseball team won both games of their day-one double header against the Thunderwolves of Colorado State University – Pueblo, on Friday, Mar. 8. The Cowboys rode the arms of starter
Greg Hansen and closer
Oscar Almeida to take a 5-3 victory in game one. In game two, the Cowboys scored four runs in the sixth inning to overcome a 6-3 deficit and grab the win 8-7. With the wins, the Cowboys are now on a seven game winning streak. The Cowboys, led by Head Coach
Steve Jones, improve to a perfect 6-0 record in the RMAC and 9-5 in overall play.
NMHU 5 – CSUP 3
The teams battled for four and a half scoreless innings before the Thunderwolves opened up the scoring in the bottom of the fifth inning. They picked up two runs on three hits in the inning, taking advantage of two Cowboy errors. CSU-Pueblo held a 2-0 lead after five innings of play.
The Cowboys picked up a run in the top of the sixth inning.
Jordan Goliat reached first base on a single to right field and he advanced to third base in the next two Cowboy at bats.
Kyle Herrington brought Goliat home with an RBI sacrifice fly to center field, closing to within one run (2-1) of the Thunderwolves.
After holding the Thunderwolves scoreless in the bottom of the sixth inning, the Cowboys' bats went to work again in the top of the seventh.
Jarred Middleton drew a walk and
Javier Ledford followed that up with a double down the left field line, giving the Cowboys base runners on second and third.
After a strike out,
Jordan Falcon stepped to the plate and hit an RBI single to center field, scoring Middleton, but Falcon was thrown out attempting to take second base.
Jordan Goliat was the next Cowboy batter and he hit an RBI triple, scoring Ledford.
Josh McMahon was next up for the Cowboys and he reached first base on a fielding error by CSU-Pueblo's second baseman, letting Goliat score the Cowboys' third run of the inning.
The Cowboys held CSU-Pueblo scoreless in the bottom of the seventh inning and they took a 4-2 lead after seven innings.
Errors plagued the Thunderwolves again in the eighth inning.
Kyle Davis reached first base on an error by CSU-Pueblo's second baseman. Then
Jarred Middleton hit a single to left field. The Thunderwolves' left fielder made a bad throw, allowing
Kyle Davis to score and Middleton to advance to second base. The Cowboys held a 5-3 lead after seven and a half innings.
CSU-Pueblo picked up a run in the bottom of the eighth inning off an RBI double to right-center field. The Cowboys made a pitching change after the run, bringing in closer
Oscar Almeida. Almeida struck out the last batter in the inning to maintain the Cowboys' lead at 5-3.
The Cowboys were scoreless in the top of the ninth inning and relied on Almeida to finish the game for them. The 2012 RMAC saves leader earned his third save of the year by striking out the side in the bottom of the ninth.
Greg Hansen (3-1) recorded the win for the Cowboys in seven and two-thirds innings pitched. Hansen allowed three runs on six hits and struck out seven of the 31 batters he faced in game one.
Oscar Almeida earned his third save of the season, throwing one and a third innings from the pitcher's mound. Almeida struck out all four batters he faced.
Jordan Goliat and
Josh McMahon were the offensive leaders for the Cowboys in game one. Goliat ended the game 2-4 at the plate, with two runs scored, one RBI, and a triple. McMahon finished game one 2-5 from the batter's box, with an RBI and a stolen base.
NMHU 8 – CSUP 7
The Cowboys carried their game one momentum over to game two, scoring the first runs of the game in the top of the second inning.
Kyle Davis got things started for the Pokes with a lead-off double to right-center field. Davis advanced to third when
Jordan Chavez hit a single down the right-field line.
Javier Ledford was the Pokes' next batter and he brought Davis across home plate with a hard hit ground out to second base, earning an RBI on the play. Chavez was next to score when
Jarod Jamerson hit a sacrifice fly to center field. The Cowboys held the Thunderwolves scoreless in the bottom of the second inning and took an early 2-0 lead after two innings of play.
The Cowboys' bats were alive and they took advantage again in the top of the third inning.
Jordan Goliat led off with a triple to right-center field, his second triple of the day. Two batters later,
Matt Gualco brought Goliat home with a ground out to third base. Once again the Cowboys held CSU-Pueblo scoreless in the bottom of the inning and extended their lead to 3-0.
The Thunderwolves got back into the game in the bottom of the fourth inning. They scored five runs on five hits, taking advantage of one Cowboy error. After four played, the Thunderwolves were on top 5-3.
After retiring the side in the top of the fifth inning, the Thunderwolves would pick up another run. With one out, CSU-Pueblo scored their runner on third base with a suicide squeeze. They took a 6-3 lead into the sixth inning.
The Pokes' offense went back to work in the top of the sixth.

Jarod Jamerson. In the next at bat, the Pokes'
Chris Pile took advantage of CSU-Pueblo's defensive struggles at second base, taking first on an error.
Jordan Chavez scored from third base on the play.
Jordan Goliat continued his offensive leadership in the next at bat. Goliat hit a two-RBI single to right field, scoring Jamerson and Pile, taking the lead back for the Cowboys 7-6.
More fielding mistakes by the Thunderwolves in the top of the seventh inning allowed the Pokes to score one more run.
Kyle Davis scored again when
Scott Frazier reached first base on an error by the Thunderwolves' short stop. The Pokes took an 8-6 lead into the bottom of the seventh.
Cowboy closer
Oscar Almeida took to the mound again in the bottom of the seventh, looking to get another victory for the Cowboys. Almeida got himself into a little bit of trouble and ended up walking in a run for the Thunderwolves (8-7). But he settled down and got the next two outs to earn his second save of the day.
Gavin Hite (1-0) was credited with the win for the Cowboys in game two. Hite threw one and two-thirds innings from the pitcher's mound, allowing one run on no hits and striking out two.
Oscar Almeida picked up his fourth save of the season, throwing one complete inning for the Pokes. Almeida allowed one run on one hit, walked three and struck out one.
Jordan Goliat was once again the offensive leader for the Cowboys. Goliat was 2-5 at the plate in game two. He finished with two RBIs, one run scored and another triple. Goliat had two triples in day one versus the Thunderwolves.
Kyle Davis had a great game two for the Pokes. He went 1-2 from the batter's box, with three runs scored and a double.
The Cowboys will continue conference action against the Thunderwolves tomorrow, Mar. 9, in another double-header conference showdown, in Pueblo, Colo.
