Cougars Take Game One from Cowboys, 7-6

Box Score Las Vegas, N.M. – The NMHU Cowboy Baseball team lost the first game of their four-game conference home series against the Colorado Christian University Cougars, on Apr. 12, by the final score of 7-6 in 10 innings.  The Cowboys, led by Head Coach Steve Jones, fall to 15-10 in the RMAC and 19-16 in overall play.

The Cougars took the initial 2-0 lead in the top of the second inning.  Tyler Batt hit a two-run single to center field to put CCU on the board.

Cory Falvey cut the Cougars' lead down to one run (2-1) with his solo home run to left field in the bottom of the third inning.

CCU scored another two runs (4-1) in the top of the fifth inning, on a two run single up the middle by Justin Ray.

The Cowboys picked up another run in the bottom of the fifth inning to cut the Cougars' lead down to 4-2.  Cory Falvey hit a sacrifice fly ball to left field, allowing Jordan Goliat to score from third base.

The Cowboys took a 5-4 lead in the bottom of the sixth inning.  Josh McMahon scored the first run when Scott Frazier laid down a textbook bunt.  McMahon was able to cross home plate and Frazier beat out the throw at first base.  With Derek Ward on third base and Frazier on second, Jordan Goliat stepped to the plate and hit a hard chopper to shortstop.  Ward scored on the play and Frazier was able to cross the plate when the CCU shortstop had trouble fielding the ball.

The Cougars were able to tie the game up (5-5) in the top of the eighth inning.  Sam Jones hit a hard ground ball to second base and Travis Mosler scored from third base on the play.

The Cowboys had a chance to win the game in the bottom of the ninth inning, but they couldn't capitalize in the inning and left the bases loaded.

CCU was able to score two runs in the top of the tenth inning.  RBIs by Jake Balbas and Sam Jones did the damage and gave the Cougars a 7-5 lead.

The Cowboys were able to pick up a run in the bottom of the tenth when Cory Falvey was able to reach first base on a fielding error by the Cougar's first baseman.  Chris Pile was able to score on the play from third base.  Unfortunately, the next Cowboy batter grounded out to first base to end the game.

Colorado Christian won game one of the series, 7-6 in 10 innings.

Oscar Almeida drew the start from the mound for the Cowboys and did a great job, throwing nine complete innings.  He allowed five runs (three earned runs) on 11 hits and struck out eight Cougars.  Almeida left the game with no decision.

Edgar Vela (0-1) was credited with the loss for the Cowboys.  Vela entered the game in the top of the tenth inning.  He only faced two batters but it was the first batter he walked that wound up being the winning run for the Cougars.

Cory Falvey and Jordan Falcon were the offensive leaders for the Cowboys today.
Falvey was 1-3 at the plate, with three RBIs, one run scored, a sacrifice fly, and a solo home run.
Falcon finished the game 3-6 from the batter's box.

The Cowboys continue their four-game conference home series against the Colorado Christian University Cougars on Saturday, Apr. 13.  The teams will square off in a double-header beginning at 12:00 p.m.  Game two will follow approximately 30 minutes after the completion of game one.  If you can't make it out to Brandt Park to catch your Cowboys in action, you can click HERE to follow the games on Live Stats.
