Cowboys Split Double Header Against Cougars

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 Las Vegas, N.M. – The NMHU Cowboy Baseball team split their double header against the Colorado Christian University Cougars, on Apr. 13.  The Cowboys won the first game 5-4.  Then the Cougars recovered in the second game to take an 8-3 victory.  The Cowboys, led by Head Coach Steve Jones, are now 16-11 in the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference and 20-17 in overall play.

NMHU 5 – CCU 4
The Cougars scored first in the top of the second inning.  They picked up two runs off of Travis Mosler's two-run double to right-center field, taking an initial 2-0 lead.

The Cowboys quickly evened things up in the bottom half of the second inning.  Josh McMahon and Chris Pile scored when Jarod Jamerson hit a single that rolled to the fence in outfield.  After two innings of play the game was tied up 2-2.

CCU responded in the top of the third inning with two more runs on an RBI double by Caleb Wenzel and an RBI single by Tyler Landrith, re-establishing their two-run lead (4-2).

The Cowboys' offense was prepared and they battled back in the bottom of the third.  Chris Pile got things started with an RBI single that scored Jarred Middleton.  Pile advanced to third base on a single by Derek Ward and then Jarod Jamerson brought Pile home with a single to left field.  Ward was able to score on a hard hit single to third base by Jordan Chavez.

After three innings of play, the Cowboys held a 5-4 advantage on the scoreboard.

Although the Cowboys threatened to score later on, neither team was able to put another run on the scoreboard and the Cowboys took the 5-4 victory in game one of the double header.

Ray Torres (3-2) picked up his third win of the season in the start for the Cowboys.  Torres threw a complete seven innings from the pitcher's mound, allowing four runs on seven hits and striking out three Cougars.

Jarod Jamerson and Chris Pile were the offensive leaders for the Cowboys in game one of the double header.
Jamerson was a perfect 3-3 at the plate with three RBIs.
Pile went 1-1 at the plate and drew two walks, finishing with two runs scored and one RBI.

CCU 8 – NMHU 3
The Cougars responded to the loss in game one by taking the offensive immediately in game two.  Tyler Landrith drove in the first CCU run with his single through the right side of the infield in the top of the first inning.

The Cougars extended their lead to four runs (4-0) in the top of the second inning, with RBIs by Jimmy Martinez and Caleb Wenzel, and thanks to a fielding error by the Cowboys.

CCU put up another run in the top of the fourth inning, taking a 5-0 lead.

The Cowboys were without a hit until the bottom of the fourth inning, when Justin Rodriguez broke up the no-hitter with a single up the middle.  The Cowboys picked up some momentum in the fourth and Rodriguez scored the Pokes' first run on a sacrifice fly by Jarod JamersonDerek Ward brought two more runs around for the Cowboys with his double to right-center field.  The Cowboys had cut the CCU lead down to just two runs (5-3) after four innings of play.

After a couple of scoreless innings, the Cougars gave themselves some insurance in the top of the seventh inning.  They picked up three more runs in the inning to extend their lead to 8-3.

The Cowboys didn't have an answer in the bottom half of the seventh and when the final out was recorded the Cougars had taken game two of the double header by the final score of 8-3.

Eric Martinez (0-1) was credited with the loss for the Cowboys in game two of today's double header.  Martinez started the game from the mound and threw one and a third innings for the Pokes.  He allowed four runs (three earned runs) on six hits and struck out one.

Derek Ward was the offensive leader for the Cowboys in the second game of the double header.
Ward went 2-3 at the plate with two RBIs and a double.
