Box Score Alamosa, Colo. – The NMHU Cowboy Baseball team won the first game of their four-game conference road series against the Adams State University Grizzlies, on Apr. 19, by the final score of 10-6. The Cowboys, led by Head Coach
Steve Jones, are now 18-11 in the RMAC and 22-17 in overall play.
NMHU 10 – ASU 6
The Cowboys' offense took control of the game early on and they didn't let up. They scored at least one run in each of the first seven innings of play.
The Pokes scored a run in the first and second inning, to take a 2-0 lead after two innings played.
Derek Ward added another two runs to the scoreboard in the third inning with his two-run single through the right side of the infield. After three innings, the Pokes were leading 4-0.
The Cowboys picked up two more runs in the top of the fourth inning.
Jordan Goliat scored from third base on a failed pick-off attempt by the ASU pitcher.
Jarred Middleton added the second run with his RBI single to right field, extending the Cowboys' lead to 6-0.
In the top of the fifth inning,
Chris Pile added another run to the scoreboard (7-0) with his solo home run to left field.
Cory Falvey scored for the Pokes (8-0) in the top of the sixth inning when
Derek Ward hit an RBI single up the middle.
The Cowboys added their final two runs in the top of the seventh inning.
Scott Frazier scored on an RBI double down the right-field line by
Jordan Goliat. Then,
Tyler Hayes brought Goliat home with his single through the right side of the infield. After seven innings of play, the Cowboys held a comfortable 10-0 lead.
Neither team scored in the eighth inning, but the Grizzlies would attempt a comeback in the bottom of the ninth inning. ASU picked up six runs on four hits and one error by the Cowboys, but the Pokes 10 runs would be too much for the Grizzlies to overcome. The Cowboys took the victory in game one of the series by the final score of 10-6.
Oscar Almeida (5-1) earned his fifth win of the season for the Cowboys. Almeida simply shutdown the Grizzlies' offense, throwing seven innings from the pitcher's mound and giving up no runs on five hits. He struck out seven Grizzlies on the day.
Cory Falvey and
Jarred Middleton were the offensive leaders for the Cowboys in game one.
Falvey was 3-4 at the plate, with four runs scored and a double.
Middleton also went 3-4 at the plate, with two RBIs and one run scored.
