Box Score 2 Alamosa, Colo. – The NMHU Cowboy Baseball team split their double header against the Adams State University Grizzlies, on Apr. 20. The Grizzlies took game one 3-2. The Cowboys rebounded in game two of the double header to take a 16-4 victory. The Cowboys, led by Head Coach
Steve Jones, are now 19-12 in the RMAC and 23-18 in overall play.
ASU 3 – NMHU 2
The Grizzlies scored the first run of the game in the bottom of the first inning, to take an early 1-0 lead.
Neither team was able to score a run for the next three innings and after four innings of play the Grizzlies still held their 1-0 lead.
The Cowboys got on the scoreboard in the top of the fifth inning.
Cory Falvey and
Jarred Middleton put the Cowboys on top, 2-1, with their RBI singles in the inning.
The Grizzlies took the lead back in the bottom half of the sixth inning. A two-run home run to right-center field put ASU back on top, 3-2.
The Cowboys weren't able to generate any runs in the top of the seventh and ASU took the victory in game one by the final score of 3-2.
Ray Torres (3-3) was credited with the loss for the Cowboys in game one of the double header. True to form, Torres threw a complete seven innings against the Grizzlies. He allowed three runs on five hits and struck out four Grizzlies.
Scott Frazier was the offensive leader for the Cowboys in game one of the double header.
Frazier was 2-3 at the plate with one run scored.
NMHU 16 –ASU 4
The Cowboys' offense was ready to make amends for the defeat in game one. They got off to a hot start in game two of the day's double header, putting up five runs in the top of the first inning.
The Grizzlies were able to pick up a run of their own in the bottom of the first inning and after one inning of play the Cowboys held a 5-1 lead.
After a scoreless second inning, the Pokes put up another run in the top of the third inning to extend their lead, 6-0.
The top of the fifth inning saw a crazy scoring play for the Cowboys. With the bases loaded,
Jordan Goliat hit a single to right field, scoring
Derek Ward from third base. A fielding error by the ASU right fielder allowed the remaining three base runners to cross home plate, for a four run play.
Jarred Middleton brought in one more run in the inning for the Cowboys, with his RBI single up the middle.
After holding ASU scoreless in the bottom half of the fifth inning, the Cowboys held an 11-1 lead.
The Pokes would add three more runs to their lead in the top of the sixth inning.
Javier Ledford scored on another Grizzlies' fielding error and
Jordan Chavez drove in two more runs with his single up the middle.
ASU added a run to their score in the bottom of the sixth, but the Cowboys were still in control after six played, 14-2.
Jordan Falcon and
Jonathan Stavinoha each drove in a run for the Cowboys in the top of the seventh inning, extending the Cowboys' lead, 16-2.
The Grizzlies were able to generate two more runs in the bottom half of the seventh inning but it would not be enough to overcome the Cowboys' offensive onslaught in game two.
When the final out was recorded, the Cowboys were victorious in game two of the double header by the final score of 16-4.
Greg Hansen (4-3) picked up his fourth win of the season for the Cowboys, after an extended absence from the rotation. Hansen picked up where he had left off before his injury, throwing five innings from the mound for the Pokes. He allowed one run on three hits and struck out four Grizzlies.
Jordan Goliat and
Jarred Middleton were the Cowboys' offensive leaders in game two of today's double header.
Goliat was 3-4 at the plate, with two runs scored and an RBI.
Middleton finished the game 3-5 at the plate, with two RBIs, one run scored, and a stolen base.
