Cowboys Stage 8th Inning Comeback Against Grizzlies

Box Score Alamosa, Colo. – The NMHU Cowboy Baseball team staged an eighth-inning comeback to win the final game of their four-game conference road series against the Adams State University Grizzlies by the final score of 11-10. The Cowboys, led by Head Coach Steve Jones, improve to 20-12 in the RMAC and 24-18 in overall play.

Tyler Hayes got things started for the Cowboys in the top of the first inning with his solo home run to left field.  It was Hayes' first homer of the year and he gave the Pokes a 1-0 lead.

ASU tied things up (1-1) with a sacrifice fly in the bottom of the first inning.  The teams would remain tied up at one run apiece for the next two innings.

The Cowboys struck again in the top of the fourth inning.  Scott Frazier scored Cole Davis with his RBI single through the left side of the infield.  Then, Frazier crossed home plate on an RBI double by Tyler Hayes.

The Grizzlies went three-up and three-down in the bottom half of the fourth and the Cowboys held a 3-1 lead after four innings of play.

The ASU offense caught fire in the bottom of the sixth inning.  They picked up eight runs on six hits and one Cowboy error to take a 9-3 lead after six innings.

The Cowboys responded well in the top of the seventh inning, scoring three runs and cutting the ASU lead down to 9-6.  Derek Ward got things started with an RBI triple to right field.  Then in the next at bat, Josh McMahon drove Ward in with his RBI double to left-center field.  Cole Davis finished off the Cowboys' scoring in the seventh with his RBI single to left-center field, bringing McMahon across home plate.

In the bottom half of the seventh inning, the Grizzlies added another run to the score board with a solo home run to right-center field.  ASU looked to be in good position for the win, with their 10-6 lead after seven innings of play.

But the Cowboys weren't done yet and their offense came to life again in the top of the eighth inning.  Jordan Goliat scored the first run of the inning when Cory Falvey hit a single to left-field.  Jarred Middleton got into the action with a two-run single to center field, scoring Falvey and Tyler HayesJustin Rodriguez put two more runs on the board for the Pokes with his two-RBI single to right field.  The Pokes picked up five runs on four hits in the inning, taking an 11-10 lead.

The Cowboy defense did their job in the bottom half of the eighth inning, holding the Grizzlies scoreless. 

Then Edgar Vela closed up shop in the bottom of the ninth, taking the Grizzlies one-two-three with bookend strikeouts.  When the final batter had struck out, the Cowboys emerged with an 11-10 win in their final game of the season against Adams State University.

Daniel Clark (2-0) picked up his second win of the season for the Cowboys.  Clark entered the game in the sixth inning and threw three innings from the pitcher's mound.  He allowed one run on two hits and struck out three.

Edgar Vela earned his first save of the season for the Cowboys.  Vela was perfect in his one complete inning on the mound.  He shut the Grizzlies' offense down, keeping ASU hitless and striking out two.

Tyler Hayes and Cory Falvey were the Cowboys' offensive leaders against the Grizzlies.
Hayes was a perfect 5-5 at the plate, with two RBIs, two runs scored, a double, a stolen base, and a solo home run.
Falvey finished the game 4-6 from the batter's box, with two runs scored and an RBI.
