Cowboys Split Double Header Against Thunderwolves

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 Las Vegas, N.M. – The NMHU Cowboy Baseball team earned a split in their double header against the Colorado State University – Pueblo Thunderwolves, on Apr. 27.  The Thunderwolves took game one by the final score of 8-2.  The Cowboys rebounded in game two to take a 13-8 victory.  The Cowboys, led by Head Coach Steve Jones, improve their record to 22-13 in the RMAC and 26-19 in overall play.

After a scoreless first inning, the Thunderwolves put their first run on the scoreboard with a run in the top of the second inning.
CSUP would add two more runs to their total in the top of the third inning.

The Cowboys finally got on the scoreboard in the bottom half of the third inning when Tyler Hayes hit a two-run home run to left field.  Hayes' second home run of the season cut the Thunderwolves lead down 3-2 after three innings of play.

The Thunderwolves' offense took over the rest of the game, scoring five runs in the four remaining innings to secure the 8-2 victory.

Ray Torres (3-4) was credited with the loss for the Cowboys.  Torres threw six innings from the pitcher's mound, allowing eight runs (six earned runs) on 10 hits and striking out four batters.

Tyler Hayes was the Cowboys offensive leader in game one.
Hayes was 1-2 at the plate with two RBIs, one runs scored, and a home run.

NMHU 13 – CSUP 8
The Cowboys' offense was quick to make amends for their defeat in the first game of the double header.  They posted seven runs in the first two innings to take a 7-0 lead after two innings of play.

The Thunderwolves responded with five runs in the top of the third inning and another two runs in the top of the fifth inning.  CSUP had tied the game up 7-7 after four and a half innings of play.

In the bottom half of the fifth inning the Pokes' offense responded to the challenge.  They scored two runs in the fifth, to go ahead 9-7.

In the top of the sixth inning, the Thunderwolves were able to bring one run across home plate, cutting the Cowboys' lead down to just one run (9-8).

The Cowboys gave themselves some breathing room in the bottom of the sixth inning with four runs scored on one play.  With the bases loaded, Kyle Davis hit a line drive to right field.  The Thunderwolves' right fielder tried to scoop up the ball on the run but missed and let the ball roll all the way to the wall in right field.  All four Cowboy base runners were able to cross home plate, giving the Pokes a 13-8 lead.

Cowboy reliever Edgar Vela shut the Thunderwolves' offense down in the top of the seventh to secure the 13-8 victory for the Cowboys.

Braulio Hernandez (2-4) was credited with the victory in game two for the Cowboys.  Hernandez entered the game in the fifth inning with two outs and threw one complete inning of relief.  He faced eight batters, allowing one run on two hits and striking out one batter.

Edgar Vela picked up his third save of the season in his one and two-thirds innings pitched.  Vela only allowed one hit and struck out one batter.

The Cowboys will continue their final home series of the year, on Apr. 28, against the Thunderwolves of CSU-Pueblo.  The Cowboys will honor their 16 departing seniors before the start of the game at approximately 11:30 a.m.  The first pitch is scheduled for 12:00 p.m.  If you can't make it to Brandt Park to catch your Cowboys in action, you can click HERE to follow the game on Live Stats.
