Box Score Las Vegas, N.M. – The NMHU Cowboy Baseball team dropped their final home game of the season to the Colorado State University – Pueblo Thunderwolves by the final score of 6-4. The Cowboys celebrated Senior Day before the game, honoring their 16 departing senior players. The Cowboys, led by Head Coach
Steve Jones, fall to 22-14 in the RMAC and 26-20 in overall play.
CSUP 6 – NMHU 4
The Thunderwolves were able to score the first run of the game in the top of the first inning, taking a quick 1-0 lead.
The Cowboys tied the game up (1-1) in the bottom of the second inning.
Jordan Chavez reached first base on a bad throw by the CSUP short stop.
Thomas Lyons had advanced to third base on the play and he took advantage of the error, crossing home plate for the Pokes' first run.
The Cowboys took a 3-1 lead in the bottom of the third inning.
Jarred Middleton drove in
Tyler Hayes with his RBI single through the left side of the infield. In the next at bat,
Thomas Lyons hit an RBI single to center field, allowing
Josh McMahon to score.
The Thunderwolves' Chase Lacomb crossed home plate in the top of the fifth inning, cutting the Cowboys' lead down to just one run (3-2).
Lacomb would do more damage to the Cowboys in the top of the sixth inning. With the bases loaded and two outs, Lacomb saw a pitch he liked and drove it out of the ball park in right field, putting the Thunderwolves on top 6-3.
The Cowboys'
Jordan Chavez scored a run in the bottom of the seventh inning when
Jordan Goliat hit a single up the middle. Chavez's run cut into the Thunderwolves' lead (6-4).
Unfortunately, the Cowboy offense wasn't able to generate any more runs and the Thunderwolves left town with a 6-4 victory in the final game of the series.
Chris Prokupek (6-3) was credited with the loss for the Cowboys. He threw seven and two-thirds innings from the mound, allowing six runs on nine hits. Prokupek struck out 10 Thunderwolves in the game.
Thomas Lyons,
Jordan Goliat, and
Josh McMahon were the Cowboys' offensive leaders in their final home game of the season.
Lyons finished the game 2-3 at the plate, with one RBI and a run scored.
Goliat went 2-5 from the batter's box with an RBI.
McMahon was also 2-5 at the plate with one run scored.
