Cowboys Defeat Rangers in Game One, 8-3

Box Score Denver, Colo. – The NMHU Cowboy Baseball team won the first game of their four-game conference road series against the Regis University Rangers, on Apr.5, 8-3.  The Cowboys scored six runs in the first two innings to take an early lead that the Rangers were never able to overcome.  The Cowboys, led by Head Coach Steve Jones, improve their record in the RMAC to 13-8 and 17-14 in overall play.

The Cowboys' offense got off to a quick start in the top of the first inning, scoring three runs.  Jarred Middleton put the Pokes on the scoreboard with his two-run double to right-center field.  Josh McMahon brought Middleton home with his RBI single, giving the Cowboys an early 3-0 lead.

The Rangers were able to score two runs in the bottom of the first inning, cutting the Cowboys' lead down to 3-2.

The Cowboys got back to work in the top of the second inning.  With the bases loaded, Jordan Goliat earned an RBI by beating out the double play attempt at first base, allowing Derek Ward to score from third.  Cory Falvey was up to bat next and drove in Jordan Falcon and Goliat with his two-run double to right-center field.

After shutting down the Regis offense in the bottom half of the second inning, the Cowboys held a 6-2 lead after two innings played.

The Rangers scored their final run in the bottom of the fourth inning, cutting the Pokes' lead down to three runs (6-3).

The Cowboys answered back in the top of the fifth inning.  After Cory Falvey reached base with a single, Jarred Middleton hit a two-run home run to left field, giving the Cowboys an 8-3 advantage.

The Rangers had an opportunity to score in the sixth inning, but the Cowboys' defense was able to get out of the inning.

Neither team scored in the final three innings and the Cowboys were able to come away with an 8-3 victory in game one of their road series against the Rangers.

Oscar Almeida (4-1)earned the victory for the Cowboys.  He started the game for the Pokes and threw seven innings from the pitcher's mound.  Almeida allowed three runs on eight hits and struck out eight batters.

Jarred Middleton was the Cowboys' offensive leader against the Rangers in game one.  Middleton was 2-4 at the plate with four RBIs, two runs scored, a double, and a two-run home run.
