Cowboys Split Double Header Against Rangers

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 Denver, Colo. – The NMHU Cowboy Baseball team split their double header, on Apr. 6, against the Regis University Rangers.  The Cowboys won the first game in extra innings by the final score of 5-3.  In game two, the Rangers rallied for the 14-4 victory.  The Cowboys, led by Head Coach Steve Jones, are now 14-9 in the RMAC and 18-15 in overall play.

The Cowboys got on the scoreboard in the top of the first inning, when Tyler Hayes scored an unearned run to give the Pokes the 1-0 lead.

The Rangers tied the game up in the bottom of the second inning (1-1) on a throwing error by the Cowboys' catcher.

The Pokes took a 3-1 lead in the fourth inning with RBIs by Tyler Hayes and Jordan Goliat.

Regis closed the gap to just one run (3-2) in the bottom of the sixth inning.

The Cowboys still held the advantage in the seventh inning, but a run by the Rangers in the bottom of the seventh sent the game into extra innings tied up 3-3.

The Cowboys were able to secure the victory (5-3) in the top of the eighth inning with RBI singles from Jarred Middleton and Josh McMahon.  The Pokes' defense shut down the Rangers' offense in the bottom of the eighth and the Cowboys had won their second game of the four-game series, 5-3.

Daniel Clark (1-0) was credited with the victory for the Cowboys.  Clark entered the game in the bottom of the seventh inning and threw one full inning from the pitcher's mound.  He allowed no runs on zero hits and struck out one.

Edgar Vela earned his first save of the year, facing the last Regis batter in the bottom of the eighth inning.  Vela got the out and saved the victory for the Cowboys.

Tyler Hayes was the offensive leader for the Cowboys in the first game.  He was 1-2 at the plate with one RBI and two runs scored.

RU 14 – NMHU 4
The Rangers entered the second game of the double header looking for revenge for the two previous losses.  They took the initial 1-0 lead in the bottom of the first inning.

The Cowboys scored two runs in the top of the second to go out in front of the Rangers 2-1.  Javier Ledford hit a two-run single up the middle, scoring Chris Pile and Josh McMahon on the play.

The Rangers took back the lead (3-2) in the bottom half of the second inning with a sacrifice fly and an RBI double.

The Rangers did most of their damage in the third inning.  They were able to score five runs in the bottom of the third inning, to take an 8-2 lead.

The Rangers added three more runs to their lead in the bottom of the fourth inning, giving themselves a comfortable 11-2 advantage on the scoreboard after four innings played.

Cory Falvey added another run to the Cowboys' score with his RBI single in the top of the fifth inning, cutting the Regis lead down to 11-3.

The Rangers kept the pressure on in the bottom of the fifth inning with two more runs, extending their lead to 13-3.

The Pokes picked up another run (13-4) in the top of the sixth inning off of Jonathan Stavinoha's RBI single up the middle.

Regis answered the challenge in the bottom half of the sixth inning with a solo home run, to maintain their 10 run lead (14-4).

Neither team scored in the seventh inning and the Rangers went on to win game two 14-4.

Braulio Hernandez (1-4) was credited with the loss in game two for the Cowboys.  He threw two and two-thirds innings from the pitcher's mound, allowing eight runs on 11 hits.  Only four of Hernandez's runs were earned and he left the game with two strikeouts.

Cory Falvey and Jonathan Stavinoha were the offensive leaders for the Cowboys in game two.
Falvey was a perfect 3-3 at the plate, with an RBI.
Stavinoha entered the game in the top of the fifth inning, going a perfect 2-2 at the plate.  He had an RBI and scored one run.
