Cowboys Grab Third Win over Rangers, 12-6

Box Score Denver, Colo. – The NMHU Cowboy Baseball team won the final game of their four-game conference series against the Regis University Rangers, on Apr. 7, by the final score of 12-6.  Although the Rangers scored first in the game, the Cowboys were quick to respond.  Josh McMahon's two-run double in the top of the seventh inning gave the Cowboys the lead for good and they went on to earn the victory in Denver.  The win on Sunday gave the Cowboys a three games to one advantage in their road-series against the Rangers.  The Cowboys, led by Head Coach Steve Jones, improve to 15-9 in the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference and 19-15 in overall play.

The Rangers took the initial 2-0 lead in the game, with two runs in the bottom of the second inning.

The Cowboys picked up a run in the top of the third inning when Cory Falvey drove in Scott Frazier with a hard-hit single up the middle.  Regis was able to score another run in the bottom of the third, maintaining their two-run advantage (3-1) after three innings of play.

The Cowboys picked up another run in the top of the fourth inning.  Derek Ward was able to score from first base when Mike Bazuin drilled a pitch to the wall in left-center field.  Bazuin's RBI double cut the Rangers' lead down 3-2 and he was able to reach third base on the throw.

The Pokes took a 4-3 lead in the top of the sixth inning with Derek Ward's two-run home run over the fence in the right field.  In the bottom half of the sixth, the Rangers regained the lead (5-4) with a two-run single to right field.

Jonathan Stavinoha tied the game up (5-5) when Jordan Falcon hit a single up the middle.  With runners on first and second base, Josh McMahon would give the Cowboys the lead for good with a double to right field.  Falcon and Jarred Middleton crossed home plate on the play, giving the Pokes a 7-5 advantage.

Regis scored one run in the bottom of the seventh inning, cutting the Cowboys' lead down to just one run (7-6).

The Cowboys picked up another two runs in the top of the eighth inning, thanks to a fielding error by the Rangers, extending their lead 9-6.

The Cowboys would score another three runs in the top of the ninth.  Thomas Lyons came into the game as a pinch hitter for the Pokes and drove in Jarred Middleton with his RBI single up the middle.  Jordan Chavez entered the game to pinch run for Lyons and after an out Mike Bazuin stepped up to the plate.  Bazuin hit a two-run home run to right-center field and the Cowboys took a 12-6 lead.

Gavin Hite had taken the mound for the Cowboys in the bottom of the seventh inning and he finished off the Rangers, three-up and three-down, in the bottom of the ninth to secure the 12-6 victory for the Cowboys.

Chris Prokupek (5-2) earned his fifth victory of the year in his start for the Cowboys.  He threw six innings for the Pokes, allowing six runs on 12 hits.  Only five of Prokupek's runs were earned and he struck out three batters.

Gavin Hite picked up his first save of the season in his three innings of relief for the Pokes.  Hite shut down the Rangers' offense, giving up no hits and keeping Regis scoreless while striking out three.

Derek Ward and Mike Bazuin were the offensive leaders for the Pokes on Sunday afternoon.
Ward was 2-5 at the plate, with three runs scored, two RBIs, and a two-run home run.
Bazuin finished the game 2-4 in the batter's box, with three RBIs, one run scored, a double, and a two-run home run.

The Cowboys picked up three important wins against Regis University over the weekend.  They regain the top spot in the RMAC Plains Division and are looking like a good bet for the conference tournament in May.
