Cowboys Keep Playoff Hopes Alive with 10 Runs Against Mines

Box Score Grand Junction, Colo. – Seven different Cowboys scored in a 10-3 tournament saving victory over the Orediggers of the Colorado School of Mines on Friday afternoon.  The Cowboys, led by Head Coach Steve Jones, move on in the tournament to face the top seed Colorado Mesa Mavericks tomorrow (May 11) at 3:30 p.m.  The winner gets a spot in the RMAC Championship Game.

Although the Orediggers took the initial lead with a run in the first inning, the Cowboys' offense came out of its' offensive slump with a two-out rally of five runs in the top of the third inning.

Thomas Lyons got things started in the top of the third, with an RBI single though the right side, scoring Tyler HayesJosh McMahon put two more runs on the board with a double to right center, bringing home Cory Falvey and Lyons.  After Jarred Middleton drew a walk, Cole Davis stepped to the plate and drove in McMahon and Middleton with a double to left center. 

The Cowboys held a 5-1 lead after keeping the Orediggers scoreless in the bottom of the third inning, but the Pokes' offense was just getting warmed up. 
Two more runs in the top of the fourth inning saw their lead increase to six runs (7-1).  Thomas Lyons got his second RBI of the day when he drove in Jordan Falcon with a sacrifice fly to left field.  Josh McMahon kept the momentum going with a run scoring single through the left side, bringing Jordan Goliat across home plate.

The Cowboys kept hammering the CSM pitchers, putting up a run in the fifth and sixth innings (9-1).  RBI singles by Tyler Hayes (5th inn.) and Mike Bazuin (6th) gave the Cowboys an eight run advantage. 

An RBI double in the bottom of the seventh gave the Orediggers their second run of the game (9-2), but Jordan Goliat scored on a throwing error in the top of the ninth to restore the eight run lead (10-2).

An RBI double with two outs gave the Orediggers another run, but Chris Prokupek finished his complete game victory by getting the next batter to fly-out in center field.  The Cowboys move on in the RMAC Championship Tournament with a 10-3 victory over Colorado School of Mines in the second round.

Chris Prokupek (7-3) picked up his seventh win of the season for the Cowboys, allowing just three runs on seven hits.  Prokupek struck out six in his third complete game of the season.

The Cowboys' offense came to life in a complete team effort that saw every player contribute to run manufacture.  Josh McMahon and Thomas Lyons led the way for the team, starting the third inning resurgence that propelled the Cowboys to victory.

McMahon was 2-4 at the plate with three RBIs, two runs scored, and a double.
Lyons finished the game 2-5 in the batter's box with two RBIs and a run scored.

The Cowboys advance to game eight of the RMAC Championship Tournament, facing the top seed Colorado Mesa Mavericks in a show down for a spot in the championship game on Sunday (May 12).  Colorado Mesa advanced to game eight with an 8-0 knock out of the Metro State Roadrunners before the Cowboys' Friday afternoon game.   

The Mavericks swept the Cowboys the last time the teams met in Grand Junction this season, but the Orediggers proved in the first round that the Mavericks are not invincible.  The Cowboys will need another complete team effort to keep their hopes of an RMAC title alive in 2013.
