Cowboys Split Double Header Against Roadrunners

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 Denver, Colo. – The NMHU Cowboy Baseball team split their first double header of the weekend against the Metropolitan State University of Denver Roadrunners, on May 4.  The Roadrunners picked up five runs in the eighth inning of game one, taking a 12-8 victory.  In game two, the Cowboys prevailed by the final score of 8-5.  The Cowboys, led by Head Coach Steve Jones, are now 23-15 in the RMAC and 27-21 in overall play.

MSUD 12 – NMHU 8
Cory Falvey started the scoring in the top of the third inning with a three-run home run, giving the Cowboys a 3-0 lead early on.

The Roadrunners picked up one run in the third inning and another in the fourth, cutting the NMHU lead down to just one run (3-2).

The Cowboys picked up another run in the top of the fifth inning when Chris Pile drew a walk with the bases loaded.

A two-run home run by Metro State's Jacob Nelson in the bottom of the fifth gave the Roadrunners their first lead of the game (5-4).

Metro State scored two more runs in the sixth inning, extending their lead (7-4).

The Cowboys rallied in the top of the eighth inning, picking up four runs.  Scott Frazier started the rally with an RBI double which was followed by Jordan Falcon's two-run double.  Falcon scored two batters later when Tyler Hayes hit a single to right field.  The Cowboys held an 8-7 lead going into the bottom half of the eighth inning.

Unfortunately for the Pokes, Metro State responded in the bottom of the eighth with five runs.  The Roadrunners took a 12-8 lead into the top of the ninth.  The Cowboys were unable to generate any runs in the ninth and the Roadrunners took a 12-8 victory in game one.

Gavin Hite (1-1) was credited with the loss in game one.  Hite entered the game n the eighth inning and gave up three runs (one earned run) on two hits.

Tyler Hayes and Cory Falvey were the Cowboys' offensive leaders in game one.
Hayes was a perfect 3-3 at the plate, with two runs scored and one RBI.
Falvey was 1-4 from the batter's box, with three RBIs from his three-run home run in the third inning.

NMHU 8 – MSUD 5
The Roadrunners took the initial lead in game two.  A two-run double to left-center field gave them a 2-0 lead after the first inning of play.

A series of stolen bases in the top of the third inning gave the Cowboys their first run of the game.  Jarod Jamerson started things off by stealing third base.  Then Jordan Chavez drew a walk to get on first base.  On the very next play the Cowboys executed a double steal, with Chavez taking second base and Jamerson stealing home.  The skillful play cut the Roadrunners' lead down to just one run (2-1).

In the top of the fourth inning, the Cowboys took the lead (4-2) with a three-run home run by Thomas Lyons.  The Roadrunners picked up a run in the bottom of the fourth, scoring on a wild pitch.

Metro State tied the game up (4-4) in the bottom of the fifth off an RBI single to left field.

The Pokes responded in the top of the seventh inning with four runs on four hits.  Cory Falvey's single to center field brought two runs home.  Falvey was the next to score when Justin Rodriguez reached on a fielder's choice.  Kyle Herrington finished up the scoring rally with an RBI single to center field, scoring Jonathan Stavinoha who was pinch running for Rodriguez.

A solo home run by the Roadrunners in the bottom of the seventh cut into the Cowboys' lead, but when the final out was recorded the Cowboys had taken game two by the final score of 8-5.

Daniel Clark (3-0) picked up the win in game two for the Cowboys.  Clark entered the game in the fifth inning and threw three innings from the pitcher's mound.  He allowed two runs (one earned run) on four hits and struck out three.

Lyons went 2-4 at the plate, with three RBIs and one run scored from his three-run home run.
Falvey was 2-3 from the batter's box, with two RBI, one run scored, and a stolen base.

Unfortunately for the Cowboys, the Colorado State University – Pueblo Thunderwolves won both games of their double header against Adams State University, on May 4.  The Thunderwolves have jumped in front of the Cowboys in the RMAC Plains Division and they need just one win tomorrow (May 5) to clinch the division title.
