Box Score 2 Denver, Colo. – The NMHU Cowboy Baseball team finished the 2013 regular season with a split in their double header against the Metropolitan State University of Denver Roadrunners, on May 5. The Roadrunners rallied late in game one to grab a 5-4 victory. The Cowboys followed that up in game two with a late rally of their own, winning the final game of the season 5-4.
The Cowboys, led by Head Coach
Steve Jones, finish the 2013 regular season with a 28-22 overall record and 24-16 in the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference. They finished second in the RMAC Plains Division and earned a #3 seed in the 2013 RMAC Baseball Tournament, beginning May 8 in Grand Junction, Colo.
MSUD 5 – NMHU 4
Game one was scoreless until the top of the fourth inning when
Kyle Herrington drove in the Cowboys' first run with an RBI double down the right field line.
The Cowboys took a 3-0 lead, in the top of the fifth inning, off of
Cory Falvey's two-run home run to right field.
Jordan Chavez would tack on another run for the Cowboys (4-0) in the top of the sixth inning with his RBI single to left field.
The Roadrunners began their game one rally in the bottom of the seventh inning. They picked up three runs on a single and a two-run double, cutting the Cowboys' lead down to just one run (4-3).
Metro State tied the game up (4-4) in the top of the eighth with an RBI triple. They would win the game (5-4) with an RBI single in the bottom of the ninth inning.
Edgar Vela (1-2) was credited with the loss for the Cowboys in game one. Vela entered the game in the seventh inning, allowing two runs on two hits.
Cory Falvey was the Cowboys' offensive leader in game one. He was 2-4 at the plate, with two RBIs, one runs scored, a double and a home run.
NMHU 5 – MSUD 4
Metro State scored one run in the bottom of the first inning to take an early 1-0 lead in game two. But the Cowboys answered back in the top of the second inning, tying the game up (1-1) with an RBI single by
Jordan Falcon.
The Roadrunners regained the lead in the bottom half of the second, scoring three runs on four hits to take a 4-1 lead.
It was the Cowboys' turn to come from behind and
Cole Davis rose to the challenge in the top of the fourth inning. Davis drove in two runs with a single to right field, cutting the Roadrunner lead down to just one run (4-3).
Josh McMahon tied the game up (4-4) for the Pokes in the top of the fifth inning. His RBI single to center field scored
Derek Ward.
The Cowboys took the lead for good in the top of the sixth inning.
Jarod Jamerson hit a sacrifice fly to right field, scoring
Jordan Falcon and putting the Cowboys on top 5-4.
Michael Garcia (3-2) picked up his third win of the season for the Cowboys in game two. Garcia entered the game in the fifth inning and threw three innings from the pitchers' mound. He allowed no runs on four hits and struck out two.
Josh McMahon and
Cole Davis were the offensive leaders for the Cowboys in game two.
McMahon finished the game 3-4 at the plate, with two runs scored and an RBI.
Davis was 2-3 from the batter's box, with two RBIs.
The Cowboys finished second in the RMAC Plains Division. They earned a #3 seed in the RMAC Baseball Tournament, hosted by Colorado Mesa University in Grand Junction, Colo.
