Box Score Grand Junction, Colo. – The NMHU Cowboy Baseball team lost to the Regis University Rangers, in the first round of the RMAC Championship Tournament, by the final score of 11-4. The Cowboys will now face the Orediggers of the Colorado School of Mines tomorrow, May 10 (3:30 p.m.), in this double-elimination tournament.
RU 11 – NMHU 4
The Rangers jumped out to an early 2-0 lead in the top of the first inning, scoring their runs on a pair of singles. They extended their lead (3-0) with another run in the top of the second.
Josh McMahon led off the bottom of the second with a double to left center. McMahon was able to advance to third on a wild pitch and
Mike Bazuin drove him in with another double left center. The Cowboys' first run of the game cut the Rangers' lead, 3-1.
A four-run fourth inning gave the Rangers a six run lead (7-1). The Regis bats had the answer for the Cowboys' pitching staff and they put up three more runs in the sixth inning (10-1).
After another Regis' run in the top of the seventh (11-1), the Cowboys'
Mike Bazuin tried to rally the team with a solo home run to left field (11-2).
In the bottom of the ninth inning, the Cowboys picked up two runs off solo home runs by
Cole Davis and
Thomas Lyons, but it would be too little too late. The Cowboys move on in the bracket with an 11-4 loss in the first round to Regis University.
The Cowboys will face off against the Colorado School of Mines Orediggers in the second round of the RMAC Championships. The Orediggers pulled off a 6-4 first round upset of the no. 1 seed Colorado Mesa Mavericks. The Cowboys need a win in tomorrow's game to continue playing in the double-elimination tournament.
