OCT. 11 at COLORADO MESA: LIVE STATS | LIVE VIDEO

DURANGO and Grand JUNCTION, Colo.
– The New Mexico Highlands volleyball team (7-11, 2-6 Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference) faces a critical weekend when they travel to Fort Lewis (5-11, 2-6 RMAC) and Colorado Mesa (13-3, 7-1 RMAC).

The Cowgirls are coming off their second win of the season against rival Eastern New Mexico, winning in Portales Tuesday (Oct. 7) in four sets. Freshman Katie Trammel hit a blazing .722 for the match with 14 kills and one error on 18 swings. Classmate Shayli Schulz nearly had a triple-double with 40 assists, nine digs and six kills.

Senior Alicia Moreno added 12 kills.

Moreno leads the team with 2.77 kills per set while she is second on the team with 2.97 digs per set. Senior Jessica Piper contributes 3.92 digs per set.

Scouting Fort Lewis

With both Highlands and the Skyhawks sitting two games out from the final RMAC Tournament spot, Friday's volleyball match in Durango, Colorado, at 7 p.m. is critical.

The Cowgirl hitters will need to be on high alert as Fort Lewis is 75th in the country with 2.02 blocks per set. However, both teams are in the same boat with hitters as Ashley Wells lead the Skyhawks with only 2.76 kills per set.

Having a strong block has helped the Skyhawks' back row as Ally Dell'Amico is fourth in the conference and 58th in the nation with 4.87 digs per set.

Fort Lewis' conference wins have been Black Hills State and Western State. Highlands lost in five at Black Hills State. However, Fort Lewis has lost to Eastern New Mexico.

Scouting Colorado Mesa

The Mavericks sit a half game out of first in the RMAC, sitting in a three-way tie for second. They are the only RMAC team who has beaten conference-leading Regis while Colorado Mesa's lone conference loss was Metropolitan State University of Denver.

The block for Highlands will be tested. The Mavericks are seventh in the nation with 14.6 kills per set.

However, Colorado Mesa records its kills by committee as no player for the Mavericks ranks in the top-120 in the nation in kills per set. Melissa Hess leads the team with 3.25 kills per set while Audrey Steinkirchner adds 3.11 kills per set. Casey Ball has 2.74 kills per set.
