LARAMIE, Wyo. – The New Mexico Highlands wrestling team picked up a pair of placers when they competed at the Cowboy Open at the University of Wyoming this past Saturday (Nov. 8).
In his first competition of the season, redshirt sophomore
Cody Marquez swept through the amateur bracket at heavyweight to claim the title. It took all of 52 seconds for Marquez to pick up six points with a pin of Alexis Garcia of Great Falls. He followed that up with a major against Gabriel Escobedo of Northwest Wyoming CC, 10-0. He recorded a pair of second period falls against unattached wrestlers Jack Kuck (4:25) and Austyn Harris (3:41) to reach the finals.
Against his first NCAA competitor of the season, Marquez made the most by taking a major decision against Gabriel Gonzales, 13-2.
Redshirt freshman
Reis Humphrey placed for the second straight week for Highlands in the 149 pound freshman-sophomore bracket. After taking out Arram Price of Great Falls by a 7-3 decision, he advanced to the semifinals of the 149 pound amateur bracket with a thrilling win in the second sudden victory period 4-2 against Dane Robbins of Air Force. After a tough 6-1 defeat at the hands of Branson Ashworth of Wyoming, he pinned Drew Randall of Montana State-Northern in the semifinals of the pigtails.
In the third-place match, Humphries fell to Joseph Grable of Northern Colorado, 7-5.
The wrestling team returns to the mats for its final competition of 2014 Nov. 22 when it makes the first of two trips to Kearney, Nebraska, for the Nebraska-Kearney Open.
