LAS VEGAS, N.M. – The New Mexico Highlands volleyball team (11-16, 5-11 Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference) looks to make a final stand in an attempt to make the Conference Tournament when it battles CSU-Pueblo (15-11, 9-7 RMAC) Friday at 7 p.m. and Western State (0-20, 0-16 RMAC) on Saturday at 7 p.m.

In late October, The Cowgirls swept the Mountaineers and Thunderwolves in Las Vegas. For the weekend, freshman Kristin Woody led the Cowgirls with 29 kills and a .355 hitting percentage. Senior Jessica Piper had 49 digs in nine sets (5.44 digs per set), including a career-best 34 digs in the 5-set win against CSU-Pueblo.

Scouting CSU-Pueblo

Looking to clinch the fifth seed in the RMAC Tournament, the Thunderwolves take on Western New Mexico and New Mexico Highlands at home this weekend.

Five different Thunderwolves have a kill per set or more, led by Mariangel Perez with 3.56 kills per set. But it is the block where CSU-Pueblo holds an advantage as two different players turn in more than a block per set. Oni Lattin is third in the conference with 1.19 blocks per set.

The Cowgirls won last month, thanks in part to taming the Thunderwolves block as both teams finished with nine rejections for the match.

Scouting Western State

The Mountaineers enter the weekend winless, but they look to wreak havoc on the RMAC Tournament dreams of both the Mustangs and Cowgirls. However, the Mountaineers are near the bottom of the conference and country in most statistical categories. Western State has played 75 sets on the season with only 15 wins.

However, three Mountaineers average more than two kills per set as Jordan Eatwell leads the team with 2.73 kills per set. Morgan Stansberry adds 4.11 digs per set.

Next Up

With the Cowgirls sitting two games out of the final spot of the RMAC Tournament, Highlands hopes to sweep the weekend and awaits its fate on whether it makes the RMAC Championships.
