LAS VEGAS, N.M. – The New Mexico Highlands men's (0-5, 0-2 Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference) and women's (3-3) basketball teams return to action this weekend against Western State Friday (Dec. 12) and Colorado Mesa (Dec. 13).

We Have a Winner

Just like in football, we have a $10,000 challenge winner. While football's winner was Charlie Carney, his brother, punter Patrick Carney, claimed the win by hitting a layup, free throw, three-pointer and halfcourt shot at halftime of the men's basketball game against Colorado Christian last Friday (Dec. 5).

Women's Basketball

The Cowgirls, who started the season with three losses and are on a three-game winning streak, looks to move above .500 and continue to sit atop the RMAC standings. Highlands will kick off the weekend against the Mountaineers of Western State (1-5, 0-2 RMAC) on Friday night before battling Colorado Mesa (4-2, 1-1 RMAC) on Saturday. Both games tip off at 5:30 p.m.

The Cowgirls are coming off a 3-0 week and are led in scoring for the season by senior Anngelina Sanchez with 15.3 points per game. For her first 25 games of her Highlands career, dating back to last season, Sanchez reached double-digits in scoring only twice. However, she has scored double-figures in the last four games, including all three contests last week to be named the initial RMAC Offensive Player of the Week during conference play. Teammate and former West Las Vegas Lady Don Miranda Martinez was named the Subway Athlete of the Week.

Scouting Western State Men

It will be the battle of teams looking for the first RMAC win of the season when the Cowboys take on Western State in Gunnison, Colorado.

Three players for Western State average double-digit scoring, led by Mason Biddle, who is the go-to player for the Mountaineers.

He leads the team in points (18.2), rebounds (5.8), assists (4.5) and steals (1.5) per game.

The lone win for the Mountaineers came against West Texas A&M, 97-88, on Nov. 15.

Scouting Colorado Mesa Men

Colorado Mesa looks to move up in the D2Sida Regional Poll against the "Land of Enchantment" schools this weekend. Colorado Mesa leads the RMAC in both 3-pointers (9.4) and 3-point field goal percentage (41.9). Jerry Duckworth leads the team with 24 3-pointers, while Ryan Stephan has 13.

Ryan Stephan leads the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference and ranks second in Div. II with 24.6 points per game and ranks second in the league in field goal percentage at .615 (75-122). The Lakewood, Colorado native has 197 total points this season, fifth most of any Div. II player. Stephan has shown great range making 13 3-pointers this year, second most by a Maverick. He tied his career-high with 35 points at Chadron State.

Scouting Western State Women

Like the men, the Western State women have one win and are looking for their first conference victory. The Mountaineers knocked off McMurry 70-67 Dec. 28.

Jade McIntosh leads the team in points (11.7), rebounds (7.5) and assists (1.3) per game.

Scouting Colorado Mesa Women

With a split weekend last week, Colorado Mesa dropped from the WBCA National poll for the first time since December 4, 2012. The Mavericks had been ranked for 32 consecutive weeks. However, the Mavericks were the lone team in the RMAC to secure a win on the road in the opening weekend. They defeated Chadron State 79-65 in Nebraska last Friday.

Sophomore guard Erin Reichle has scored more points through six games this season then she did all of last year. Reichle has 110 points right now while only garnering 104 last year. Reichle is fourth in the conference and 49th in the nation with 18.3 points per game.
