Matthew Chavez has tallied a hit in every game so far in 2014, but the New Mexico Highlands baseball team (2-4) dropped a pair of seven-inning games at Eastern New Mexico (6-1) 15-1 and 11-2 Saturday afternoon (Feb. 15) in Portales, N.M.
Chavez finished the game 3-for-6 with two runs scored and a double, home run and an RBI. Junior
Colby Wilmer went 2-for-6 while Nick Gonzalez added a single.
Down 8-0 entering the top of the fourth, Chavez hit a 2-1 pitch out of the ballpark in dead center to score the Cowboys first run. In the sixth, the first two batters reached before a pair of fly ball outs by Chavez and junior
Morgan McCasland scored the second run for Highlands.
Eastern New Mexico wasted no time in the second game, scoring three runs in the bottom of the first. The first three batters reached before a sacrifice fly and a pair of RBI singles scored the runs for the Greyhounds.
The Greyhounds blew the game open in the bottom of the third with five runs after two men were out. Down two strikes, Rafael Romo was hit by a pitch. A wild pitch and an RBI single by Ryan Forkel put the home team up four and opened the flood gates. Brett Ackerman added an RBI single while Matthew Burks plated a pair of runners with a double.
Forkel and Burks led the home team with three hits in four at-bats. Burks had three runs scored and two RBI's while Forkel scored a run and had three RBI's.
Rusty Edwards improved to 2-0 for Eastern New Mexico, allowing three hits and one run with five strikeouts. Junior
Zach Settles took his first loss of the 2014 season, allowing eight runs and 11 hits in three innings.
In game one, the Greyhounds scored the first 15 runs of the game and won 15-1. In the top of the sixth, Chavez doubled to lead off the inning and scored on an error by the first baseman. Eastern New Mexico, leading 7-0, scored eight in the top of the fifth. Blake Cooper hit a two-run home run in the inning while Zachary Yantes had a pinch hit, two-run double.
Senior
Daniel Clark fell to 1-1 on the season, allowing seven runs and 12 hits in three innings pitched. For the home team, Matthew Artalejo allowed only one run (unearned) and eight hits in six innings pitched.
The Cowboys wrap up the weekend tomorrow in one, nine-inning game tomorrow at 1 p.m.
