Baseball Manages One Hit in 6-0 Loss to West Texas A&M

Box Score CANYON, Texas – The Buffs had a perfect game through five innings and surrendered only one hit on the day as the New Mexico Highlands baseball team (3-5) lost at West Texas A&M (7-2) 6-0 Friday night (Feb.21).

The lone base runner for the Cowboys came in the top of the sixth. Junior Colby Wilmer singled to lead off the inning and stole second base. He was thrown out when senior Tyler Hayes grounded into a fielder's choice.

Wilmer went 1-for-3 on the afternoon while junior Blake Harrison (0-1) surrendered four runs on seven hits and two walks over six innings of work.

The home team scored both the runs it needed in the bottom of the third. Nick Chapman led the inning off with a single and advanced to second on a failed pickoff attempt. Aaron Blair added an RBI single before moving to third on a groundout and a single. David Herbert plated the second run on a sacrifice fly.

Up 4-0, the Buffs added a pair of insurance runs in the bottom of the eighth. With a man on, Justin Hargrove tripled off of junior reliever Erick McRae of the Cowboys. Hargrove scored later in the inning on a wild pitch.

Chapman and Hargrove each had a pair of hits and a run scored. Herbert had two base-knocks and two runs scored and an RBI. Dylan James (2-0) got the complete game, one-hit shutout on 101 pitches.

New Mexico Highlands returns to action tomorrow with a double header beginning at noon against West Texas A&M.
