Pitchers Getting in on the Act
To sweep a four game series - like New Mexico Highlands baseball (11-10, 8-3 Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference) did this past weekend at Metro State to move above .500 - a team needs to have a solid outing from its Friday pitcher. The Cowboys had just that in junior
Blake Harrison, who Tuesday (March 18) was named the RMAC Pitcher of the Week.
In seven innings of work on Friday (March 14) against the Roadrunners, Harrison (2-2) surrendered only an unearned run on three hits and three walks on a season-best 10 strikeouts in a Cowboys 4-2 victory. He set the tone from the very first pitch, striking out the side in the bottom of the first.
Harrison joins classmates
Matthew Chavez and
Morgan McCasland, who won RMAC Player of the Week honors earlier this season.

A Look at the National Rankings
On a six-game winning streak, the Cowboys moved back over .500 since the first weekend of the season, thanks in part to a 47th in the nation .307 batting average (second in the RMAC). The Cowboys are also 13th in the nation with 0.81 home runs per game. The Cowboys add six runs a ballgame.
While Highlands holds a 6.07 ERA (212 out of 270 baseball teams), they are good at getting out of jams thanks to a double play a ballgame (17th in the nation).
Scouting Colorado Mesa
The Mavericks are running away with the Mountain Division, holding a four-game lead over Regis, but is in a heated battle with Highlands for the potential number one seed of the RMAC Tournament.
This will be the only regular season meetings between Colorado Mesa and Highlands this season.
This may not be a series for those who love pitching duels. Both teams sit 1-2 in the conference in both batting average and runs per game. The Mavericks lead the RMAC and is 39th in the nation with a .312 batting average. They also lead the league, and are 62nd in the nation, with 6.3 runs per game. While the teams are also 1-2 in round trippers in the RMAC, Highlands hold a 17-9 edge in home runs this season.
Austin Kaiser paces the Mavericks, ranking ninth in the nation in both batting average (.542) and slugging percentage (.831). He also is 70th in the nation, averaging more than one run scored a game.
Next Up
The Cowboys take to the road with a four-game set against Colorado Mines starting next Friday (March 28).
