Box Score 2 GOLDEN, Colo. – The Cowboys dropped a pair of seven inning games Saturday (March 29) in Golden, Colo., as the New Mexico Highlands baseball team (14-14, 11-7 Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference) fell in game one 6-5 before losing to Colorado School of Mines (10-14, 8-9 RMAC) in game two, 8-2.
After falling behind 5-1 in game one, the Cowboys rallied to tie the game in the top of the third. To begin the frame, junior
Andrew Ratterman singled, stole second and advanced to third on junior
Nick Gonzales' infield hit. Junior
Morgan McCasland was hit by a pitch to load the bases, but the bags quickly were unloaded on a double down the line by junior
Joe Cervantes. Cervantes scored on a throwing error later in the inning to tie the game.
Gonzales paced the Cowboys from the plate in game on with three hits in as many at-bats with a run scored. Cervantes went 2-3 with three RBI's and a run scored. Senior
Greg Hansen fell to 3-3 on the mound for Highlands, pitching all seven innings with 10 hits and six runs (four earned).
Colorado Mines scored the winning run in the bottom of the third when a pair of infield singles and a Zach Bothwell single with two outs on the first pitch he saw put the Orediggers in the lead.
Nate Olinger (3-1) paced the home team with one hits in two at-bats with a trio of RBI's, also claiming the win by allowing seven hits and five runs (three earned) over five inning pitched. Brett Kovach threw the final two innings for his first save of the year, allowing only one hit.
Game two was scoreless through 1.5 innings, but two-out lightning in the bottom of the second plated three runs. With two outs and no one on, a pair of singles and a two-RBI double by Cody Marvel gave the Orediggers a 2-0 lead. Josh Martinez singled in the final run of the inning.
Marvel finished the game 2-for-3 with two runs scored and two RBI's. Christian Rooney claimed the win for the Orediggers, allowing four hits and one run in five innings to improve to 3-4 on the year.
Redshirt junior
Matthew Chavez led off the fourth with a home run, but Colorado Mines answered back with a five-spot in the fifth. Highlands concluded its scoring when Cervantes and senior
Jonathan Stavinoha tripled in the sixth.
Junior
Cody Brown lost his first game of the year, falling to 3-1 by allowing eight hits and seven runs (three earned) over 4.2 innings pitched.
The Cowboys will aim for a series split Sunday (March 30) with a single game against Colorado Mines beginning at noon.
