Baseball Loses Finale to Colorado School of Mines, 11-3

Box Score GOLDEN, Colo. – The Cowboys scored a single tally in the top of the first, but the Orediggers scored four in the second and seven in the fourth as the New Mexico Highlands baseball team (14-15, 11-8 Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference) fell to Colorado School of Mines (11-14, 9-9 RMAC) in the series finale Sunday afternoon (March 30).

The Cowboys took a quick lead in the top of the first when redshirt junior Matthew Chavez doubled and scored on a two-out single by junior Morgan McCasland. Highlands added a pair of unearned runs in the eighth when senior Tyler Hayes reached on an error to begin the frame and scored when junior Colby Wilmer doubled down the left field line. An infield single and by senior Jonathan Stavinoha and an RBI groundout by senior Cole Davis scored the final run of the game for the Cowboys.

Starting in the leadoff spot, Chavez paced Highlands with one hit in three at-bats with a run scored. Pinch hitting for Chavez, Wilmer had a hit in his only at-bat with an RBI and a run scored. Freshman Phil Trujillo (2-1) made his first collegiate start, surrendering eight hits and nine runs (seven earned) over 3.1 innings pitched.

Colorado Mines took the lead for good with four runs in the second. Evan Brown hit an infield single before a walk moved him to second to lead off the inning. Charlie Basil tried to bunt the runners over, but an error allowed him to reach and load the bases. A.J. Schillinger followed with his third triple of the year to put the Orediggers in the lead. Logan Smith later scored Schillinger on a sacrifice fly.

Schillinger had three hits in four at-bats with three RBI's and two runs scored. Basil went 2-for-5 with one run scored an RBI. Tommy Rodgers improved to 2-1 on the mound for the Orediggers, allowing three hits and one run scored.

The Cowboys return to action next Friday (April 4) when they host Regis for a four-game series.
