Baseball Returns Home to Battle Regis, Honors J.C.’s Pizza on Saturday

LAS VEGAS, N.M. – Wrapping up home interdivisional play this weekend, the New Mexico Highlands baseball team (14-15, 11-8 Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference) battles Regis (12-13, 9-9) in a four-game series beginning Friday (April 4) at 3 p.m. Both teams are second in their respective divisions in the conference.
 
On Saturday between games of the seven-inning double header, the New Mexico Highlands athletic department will recognize JC's New York Pizza Department and owner Joaquin Garofalo for his continued support of Cowboys and Cowgirls athletics. JC's pizza will also be available at the concession stand.

Scouting New Mexico Highlands
 
The Cowboys are looking to rebound from its first series loss since non-conference play when it lost 3-of-4 at Colorado Mines last weekend.
 
Highlands takes advantage of extra base hits as it ranks in the top-50 in the nation in doubles (53rd), triples (23rd) and home runs (24th), averaging nearly three hits for extra bases per game. Individually, junior Colby Wilmer is ninth in the nation with four triples on the year while junior Morgan McCasland is 12th in the nation with 0.28 home runs per ballgame.
 
 
While the offense is potent (32nd in the nation with a .313 batting average), Highlands is near the bottom of the nation in ERA, giving up 6.71 runs per game.
 
Individually, redshirt junior Matthew Chavez is 35th in the nation in slugging percentage (.657), 64th in batting average (.403) and 65th in on-base percentage (.487).


Junior Cody Brown is 39th in the nation in complete games (three) and leads the team with a 3-3 record. Junior Blake Harrison leads the team in both ERA (4.43) and innings pitched (44.2).
 
 
Scouting Regis
 
The Rangers – currently clinging to a fourth-place tie in the conference with Colorado School of Mines at 9-9 in the RMAC – is looking to continue its climb into the conference tournament when it visits Las Vegas this weekend.
 
It could be quite the offensive weekend as Highlands and Regis are 2-3 in the conference in batting average (Regis is 51st in the nation with a .303 batting average). In contrast, the two teams are fifth and sixth in the conference in ERA. Regis is slightly better than the Cowboys, surrendering 5.94 runs per game.
 
Regis boasts a pair of hitters in the top-nine of the conference in batting average. Tony Piazza is fifth in the RMAC and 150th in the nation with a .376 average. Not far behind, Logan Knox is ninth in the conference and 178th in the country with a .371 mark.
 
 
Brad Thout, who was named RMAC Pitcher of the Week on Wednesday (April 2), leads the team with a 3-1 record and a 2.73 ERA.
 
 
Next Up
 
The Cowboys wrap up play against the RMAC Mountain Division next week against Colorado Christian. Highlands will play a seven- and nine-inning double header both Friday (April 11) and Saturday (April 12).
