Box Score LAS VEGAS, N.M. – The Cowgirls had a brief 7-1 lead in set two against the 16th-ranked Orediggers, but Colorado School of Mines (9-1, 2-0 Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference) came back to take the set and won in three frames (25-21, 25-19, 25-18) over the New Mexico Highlands volleyball team (4-7, 0-2 RMAC) Friday night (Sept. 19) at the Wilson Complex.
Set two started off quick for the Cowgirls thanks to a kill from senior
Alicia Moreno and an error by the Orediggers. While Moreno only had six kills in the match, she did record a team-best 12 digs.
After a side out, the Cowgirls quickly got back on serve thanks to a kill by freshman
Katie Trammel. Two Colorado Mines errors around an ace and a kill by sophomore
Andrea Nunez put the home team up six. The Orediggers went on a 9-3 run to tie the set at 10.
The Orediggers, down 12-10, used a 4-0 run and never relinquished control of the set. A kill by Sarah Pekarek put Danielle Johnson-Hazlewood on serve. An ace and two Mattie Behr kills put the visitors up for good in the frame as the Orediggers claimed the set by six.
Hazlewood finished with a double-double for the visitors with a game-best in assists (29) and digs (20).
Set one was tied at 10 before Colorado Mines scored four unanswered. Corrine Din registered a kill off an overpass and Pekarek added a kill. Two errors later and the Cowgirls were down by four, never pulling within three the rest of the way. Colorado Mines hit only .122, but the Cowgirls hit .024 in the set.
In the third set, Mines rallied from a 7-5 deficit to score four straight and take the lead for good in the match.
The Cowgirls finish their three-match in three days home opening weekend Saturday (Sept. 20) when they host Colorado Christian. Match time is set for 7 p.m.
