Cowgirls get first win of the season

Box Score Goodwell, Okla.-  The New Mexico Highlands University Women's Basketball team took on the University of Texas- Permian Basin in the Heartland vs. Rocky Mountain Tournament.  Your Cowgirls came out with their first win of the season over the Falcons 64-59.
 
1st Quarter
Your Cowgirls had a slow start in the beginning of the game. UTPB had the lead (7-4) within 2:31 but then your Cowgirls went on an 8-0 run within in a minute. Junior Michelle Traynham had 7 points in just the first ten minutes and sophomore Michelle Tapia had 6 points and 4 rebounds. Then senior Kristy Marquez came in the end with 4 points. The Falcons found some ways in the paint to come back. At the end of the first quarter the Cowgirls were up (15-13)

2nd Quarter
The Falcons were not going to back down and in the 2nd quarter thye had back to back three points from Shanna Taylor and Niniva Taito. With 2:52 left in this quarter your Cowgirls were down ten (25-15). Then Senior Brittany Brown hit a shot from behind the arc. With a couple more lay-ups from the Cowgirls they came back and at half time the Cowgirls and Falcons were tied (30-30).

3rd Quarter
The third quarter Sophomore Kylee Reibel grabbed an offensive rebound and put it back up to help your Cowgirls knot up the score at 36.  Reibel then can up with another big offensive rebound that got her to the free throw line, where she sank them both. The Falcons got to the basket mutliple times and had themselves the lead at the end of the third quarter, 47-46.

4th quarter
The Falcons came out strong and got a lead on your Cowgirls 54-46 with 6:37 left in the ball game. Then senior Miranda Martinez drove to the basket and found helself at the line to complete the old fashion three point play. Martinez then came down the court on the Cowgirls next possession and hit a jumper to get your Cowgirls going again.  Junior Giulia Simioni then had a streal that that ended with a fast break lay-up by Michelle Tapia, tying the game once again at 56. Tapia worked hard in the paint tonight and helped her Cowgirls with this win.

Cowgirls of the Game
Michelle Tapia ended tonight's game with 16 points, went 6-7 FGM (86%), 4-6 (67%) from the free throw line and had 8 rebounds. Michelle Traynham had 12 points, went 4-12 FGM (34%), 3-9 (34%) from behind the arc. Kylee Reibel had 11 points, went 4-11 FGM (36%), 3-4 (75%) from the free throw line and had 4 rebounds.
 
Your Cowgirls Continue play tomorrow (Nov.14) against Oklahoma Panhandle State University  at 2 p.m. MST.
