Scouting New Mexico Highlands

Through three games, the Cowboys have put up 42 runs (14 runs per game). However, they surrendered 43 (14.3 runs per game) in a series loss at Lubbock Christian.

The Cowboys easily lead the conference with a .381 batting average, but is last with a 14.91 ERA. Through the first 20.1 innings against Lubbock Christian, they surrendered 43 innings. Senior Anthony Badalucco then stepped to the mound and picked up the save by retiring the final 11 batters by allowing only two walks while striking out five. It was his second career save as he allowed only one walk in an inning of work last season against Metropolitan State University on March 14, 2014.

Seven players hit better than .333 for the season, including a pair who are batting better than .500. Senior Joe Cervantes hit a grand slam Saturday, nearly one year to the day that former Cowboy Jordan Goliat hit the last Highlands grand slam. Ironically, Lubbock Christian gave up both grand slams.

Senior Andrew Ratterman added a pair of homeruns in the same inning.

Senior Colby Wilmer leads the team with a .583 average with seven hits in 12 at-bats with eight RBIs, three runs and a pair of doubles.

Scouting Eastern New Mexico

Eastern New Mexico (2-1) will be playing its first road series of the season this weekend, having won a three game series at home against Adams State last weekend. While the Cowboys salvaged a game in the final contest against Lubbock Christian last weekend, the Zias won the first two games before dropping the third against Adams State.

Eastern New Mexico scored 29 runs last weekend.

The Zias are hitting .337 as a team while holding a 2.88 ERA. Cody Pope leads the team and is 1-0 with a 0.00 ERA, allowing two runs (no earned) and five hits in five innings of work.

Seven Eastern New Mexico players hit better than .350 for the season, led by Dylan Nault's four hits in seven at-bats. Blake Cooper has four hits in 10 at-bats. 3-of-4 four hits have been for extra bases as he has a pair of home runs and a triple.

Next Up

The Cowboys finish up non-conference play next weekend when they welcome in West Texas A&M for a three game series Feb. 20-21.
