GUNNISON, Colo. – Senior
Salcia Slack was named Female Athlete of the Meet while head coach
Bob DeVries was Named Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference Coach of the Year as New Mexico Highlands track and field team finished with 159 points Saturday (Feb. 28) at the 2015 Conference Indoor Conference Championships.
The day started fast in the high jump, where junior
Destiny Dilworth took the event title in jumps by clearing the bar at 1.65 meters. The field event success continued in the triple jump, where Slack took the title by breaking the RMAC Championships record by 0.22 meters, recording a mark of 12.61 meters. It broke the 5-year old mark of former Cowgirl Angella Graham. Dilworth and junior
Nacia Johnson finished fourth and fifth with distances of 11.75 and 11.43, respectively.
Finally, the Cowgirls finished a successful field day by taking second and fourth in the shot put. Slack took second in the event with a toss of 13.80 meters while senior
Elizabeth Robertson took fourth with a throw of 12.69 meters.
As great as the day was in the field, Highlands had a career day in the sprints. It started in the 400 when Slack claimed another event championship, finishing in 56.62. Junior
Velma Morant (58.92) and freshman
Kristen Montano (59.21) scored three points by finishing seventh and eighth. The Cowgirls placed four in the 60 meters, with junior
Shanna Thomas and sophomore
Shanice McPherson taking the top two spots (7.43 and 7.47). Sophomores
Osheen Erskine and
Stefania Gyamfi finished sixth and seventh as Highlands scored 23 points in the event.
Highlands also placed four in the 60 hurdles and 200. Slack took her fourth title of the weekend in the hurdles, besting the field by 0.10 seconds with a time of 8.43. Erskine got on the podium by finishing third in a time of 8.56. Johnson took fourth with a time of 8.59 while Dilworth finished eighth with a time of 9.05.
In the 200, Gyamfi took second with a time of 24.47. McPherson and Morant went fourth and fifth with a time of 25.13 while Thomas finished eighth with a time of 26.28.
Finally, the 4x400 relay team of Montano, Morant, Gyamfi and Slack looked as if it took the event in 3:51.91, but they were disqualified.
Slack was named RMAC Female Athlete of the Meet, finishing the weekend with 56 points and four event titles (pentathlon, triple jump, 400 meters and 60 hurdles) and two runner-up finishes (long jump and shot put). In fact, the Cowgirls claimed the top-3 point getters as McPherson added 23 points and Dilworth had 22.
The Cowgirls return to action in two weekends at the 2015 NCAA Division II Indoor Track and Field Championships in Birmingham, Alabama.
