Baseball Readies for Critical Weekend

ALAMOSA, Colo. – The New Mexico Highlands baseball team (16-8, 10-14 Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference), currently tied for fourth in the conference for the final RMAC Tournament berth, plays Adams State (14-23, 10-14 RMAC) this weekend (April 17-19). The Grizzlies are the other team tied with Highlands in the conference.
 
The two teams had their series in Las Vegas at the end of February cancelled because of snow.
 
The Cowboys are 2-13 on the road this season and 10-14 in the RMAC. Highlands will battle nationally-ranked CSU-Pueblo at home next weekend and Regis on the road to end the season.
 
 
The Series
 
Weather depending, the series against the Grizzlies is scheduled as follows: a single, nine-inning game on Friday at 3 p.m. A doubleheader of seven-inning games on Saturday beginning at noon and a single, nine-inning game at noon on Sunday. Live statistics are available by clicking here.
 
 
Scouting New Mexico Highlands
 
The Cowboys are coming off a critical series win against Colorado Christian and are now 8-1 in their last nine home games. Conversely, Highlands is on the road this weekend for a four-game set with Adams State and have lost its last 11.
 
Fifth-year senior Omar Garcia and senior Morgan McCasland are second in the conference with seven home runs. Fifth-year senior Matthew Chavez leads the team in batting average (.383) and hits (46). On the mound, redshirt freshman Curtis Hynes leads the team with a 5.73 ERA and has a 4-2 record. McCasland leads the team with five saves, including three in as many games.
 
 
Scouting Adams State
 
If you like offense, this is the series for you. Adams State is 221st in the nation and seventh in the conference with a 7.37 ERA. Meanwhile, the Cowboys are 223rd in the nation and eighth in the conference with a 7.48. However, the two teams sit fourth and fifth in the conference in batting average as the Cowboys as a team hit .309 while Adams State hits at a .305 clip.
 
Jason Dorchinez leads the team with a .385 batting average and three triples. Dillon Bollig hits .377 and leads the team in hits (49), runs (34), doubles (12) and home runs (four). Among starters, Jeffrey Schmitt is 3-3 but has a 7.25 ERA.

The Cowboys return to action next weekend (April 24-26) when they host nationally-ranked CSU-Pueblo.
